It's actually been a tough and long 4 years for the USA and EU. losing lots of money, equipment and forces. Whereas Russia has grown.

Things are now so bad that all those Ukrainian men who fled to the USA and Europe will be deported to fight in Ukraine.

At the current rate Russia is killing over a 1000 Ukrainians +EU/US mercenaries, while losing around 30 soldiers.

The goal of Russia never was to "take over" Ukraine - but to drain and demilitarise the EU and USA = which it has done successfully.

NATO and the UN are largely dead, and mean very little in the large scheme of things.

yes it lost much more than ukraine in equipment. but as one russian wrote here 'moscow is still russian' so russian won't lose unless they need to move the capital city! and russian controlled conquered lots of land. if i had putin attitude i would just do defense in ukraine and 'free' the baltic states now.

That may prevent Natoma membership but it's also a massive problem for put in. Russia had a population crisis and a demographic crisis. They have much less of a population than what they need to keep birth rates at at least replacement levels, and they need people to work. By sending young men to die en masses like this, they're removing those needed workers and the ones for hav I NG kids, and the necessary workers to feed such families and keep the economy running.
