Why are racial slurs and rude behavior so common with teens now?

My 7th grade niece has been telling me about how rude everyone is right now, An 8th grader shoved her in the hallway and just said "move *racial slur*" and I guess racial slurs are super popular right now. I've heard so many latinos and latinas saying it too, it's an african-american term only for african-american people, but nobody is gonna stop them either.

And if you really think about it Jesus is black he was dark complected his parents the same way

Jesus is a loving God I'm sure he is sick and tired of even hearing about color because it does not matter this body that we are all in it falls to the ground at the end our spirit that has no color goes on

Ignorant kids I feel sorry for because they get their answers their attitudes their Knowledge from their parents and brothers and sisters and friends

But it's no different then when I was in high school in the late 2000s. Me and my friends casually used racial slurs, it was just normal. One time a black kid came on the bus and a bunch of kids went, "Back of the bus, back of the bus!" Another time they told the driver to leave him 'cuz they don't like his kind. One time a bunch of rednecks started a KKK faction on campus.
Me and my friends never went THAT far, we just used slurs amongst ourselves. That's just how everybody talked. I got called into the office once and a black kid started laughing, "Ha ha! That's what you get White boy!" So it was two sided.
Teenagers were always racist and assholes and disrespectful towards elders. That part hasn't changed. What has changed is ADULTS have become more immature, entitled and assholish.

Really the only difference is that this time you'll get in a lot more trouble for it. Like those kids who made the human swastika. In my day, they would've just suspended them and it'd be the end of it. No one would make national news of it

When I was a teen, slurs and edgy jokes were common. i've sieg heiled, made terrorist jokes, said the n word, etc and I think pretty much everyone has when they were like 14. That never really went away during the 'woke era' either. It's normal teen behavior, as long as it's not actually ment and is just humor.

Me and my friends did too😂 And Justin Bieber said "nlgger" when he was a teen. And I still hear about these things. Some high schoolers made the news for making a human swastika😂 Some rednecks at MY school started a KKK faction. So I think you're right. Only difference is back then, the worst that would happened is you'd get suspended for a few days, while these days you get investigated for a hate crime and end up on the local news. There were some teenagers and frat boys who even got expelled for something they said in a group chat outside of school hours. And one girl got arressted for joking that Netenyahu should bomb the school so they don't have to take finals. And an entire plane got diverted because someone named their blue tooth device "bomb." The pilot even said he knew it was a joke but still diverted. People overreact to EVERYTHING now!

This kind of behavior feels new because we’re hearing it more openly, but it isn’t new. People have used insults, exclusion, and dehumanizing language for as long as history has been recorded.

Women fighting for voting rights were mocked and attacked. Black people were enslaved and later terrorized under segregation. The Romans looked down on outsiders as “barbarians.” Different tribes, nations, classes, and ethnic groups have always found ways to treat someone else as less human.

So the real issue is not that teens suddenly invented cruelty. The issue is that some teens are repeating old patterns with modern confidence because they think it makes them edgy, funny, powerful, or untouchable.

But racial slurs are not harmless. They carry history. They carry pain. And when someone uses them casually, especially while shoving someone in a hallway, that is not “just kids being kids.” That is bullying, disrespect, and prejudice showing up in real time.

The answer is not to pretend it will disappear on its own. Each of us has to put those acts in check when we see them. Parents, teachers, students, friends, and family all have a role. Silence teaches kids that it is acceptable. Correction teaches them there are boundaries.

Your niece should report it, and the adults around her should take it seriously. History may explain why this keeps happening, but it does not excuse it.

It's the Streisand effect. The more you crush those who say certain things, the more people want to say it to piss off the powers that be. It's how jokes work.
