Now humans do have instincts that has helped our ancestors to survive for hundreds of millions of ears. The instinct doesn't come from the "processor" (rationale) of your brain but the "graphics card" (emotion, art, instinct, notice how there's not one word for it as it exists outside a logical language barrier).
When the human imagination keeps telling the same stories across different cultures and then you compare these stories to how science actually operates you'll quickly realise that ancient people understood more then most modern atheists have been brainwashed to discredit them for.

The Roman Pagans were right to notice Christianity was basically just atheism. It's atheism for the intimidated slaves who fear death.

My argument is that mythology is a collective, instinctive consciousness shared amongst an ethnicity & passed down orally. It's organic and it's what humans have accepted since our inception. Each deity represents a different role within the society of the people of that ethnic group that gives them a shared ritual perspective.
Even animals have been observed to have odd, illogical ritualistic behaviour. It's particularly common around springs, waterfalls and other iconic sites suggesting the animals are having a sort of euphoria. It happens to be springs, groves and such that were used as sacred sites by our ancestors as it was the craft of the gods. Pagans in Europe didn't see temples as holy because they were man-made, however they were still seen as sacred (which means sanctified, effectively something put on display to encourage ancestral memories).
If you've ever seen someone with autism you'll notice they have these odd ticks and compulsive magical thinking even though autistic people have the stereotype of being very rationally minded.
If you believe in ghosts (like many atheists do) I don't think these observations are far fetched at all.

Just think about it, the human brain needs both rationale and imagination to construct worlds in our heads.
