Police in the UK are reassuring people that if they seek medical help for mental health, they won't necessarily lose their guns. Now I'm sure we all agree some mental health issues like being a psychopath should rule you out from having a gun. But what about things like stress, depression or anxiety?
I reckon yes because you can end up using your gun as an emotional support crutch and when your minds in the wrong place and you feel provoked it's easy to snap.

The ultimate decision might boil down to where you stand on suicide. In the US, the vast majority of firearms related deaths are suicides. If you think people should have the right to choose how to live and how to die, then the vast majority of mental health issues are of no concern to the general public. Families and close friends of those people can intervene if they think the guns make a person a danger to themselves. Government need not be involved at all. Obviously we want to restrict access to weapons of any kind for people who have demonstrated violent tendencies toward others. Especially if they are a repeat offender. There are other questions to ask though, for the sake of a just society. Can we take weapons that are protected by law from mentally unstable people? The sikh who recently murdered a kid in cold blood had a history of questionable behavior, but somehow nobody questioned his right to carry a deadly weapon until after he killed someone. Why? Because mental health is only an issue where firearms are concerned? There is evidence that Digwa was equally obsessed with guns. Or because “religious” rights supersede the public’s rights to safety and security? Or because none of it matters unless it can be weaponized for political gain? It’s interesting how much flat out antisocial behavior is being ignored just because violent offenders don’t have guns. But the POSSIBILITY that a law abiding gun owner could turn a firearm on themselves or others is absolutely bone chilling to the same people ignoring actual criminals.
Someone with mental health issues will never spontaneously give up their gun (s) if ever they own some. If you have in mind suicide, never forget that a person willing to kill themselves will always find a way, and all in all, generally only one person is involved. No offence meant.
The real problem in my opinion is whether such a mental health issues person will not have the stupid idea to perform some mass shooting event. Impossible to really predict, but very plausible, and I have sincerely no idea how to prevent such events.
Anyway, how would you detect such a person? Many people seem perfectly normal, until something unexpected happens...
I own a firearm license and those cyclic psychological tests aren't especially extensive. If a person doesn’t have a thick folder of psychiatric problems, it's unlikely their firearm license will be revoked. By the way, every psycho can buy an black powder revolver or rifle without any registration or license here. Those cal.45 cold revolver replicas are deadly like a modern 10mm pistol and somehow I don't need to run in ballistic west on the streets. On the other hand, situation can change after Ukrainian conflict is over and illegal firearms seep over boarder in entire EU.
In the US we believe in a mentally ill person's right to commit mass shootings. If there are less than a dozen school kids dead at the scene, the cops won't even respond. If it isn't a white male's 3rd or more mass shooting they are released with a stern warning and much finger wagging.

To have a gun in England you must pass a background check and have a valid reason for owning one. I would think that mental health issues would eliminate your chances of legally owning one.
To better answer your question with a question… who determines if you have a mental health issue? The government? They don’t want their citizens to have guns. Don’t would be easy to have a thousand psychiatrists on the government payroll who just claimed anybody who thinks they need a gun is mentally ill. Problem solved no more guns
Ohhhh I think it's vital that every mentally ill individual be issued with at least 6 working firearms , so that YES if anyone annoys them they can " shoot first , question later " , how else would these poor insane prck s be able to make their point? They MUST all have guns..

I doubt anyone is going to freely give up their guns. Infact, just the opposite if they have mental health issues.
It would make sense to remove someone's guns if they are declared to have mental health issues by a medical professional. Similarly, such a person should be prohibited from obtaining a gun.
The way I see it: if you’re not fit to vote or to stand trial, you shouldn’t be allowed any lethal instruments. Neither gun nor a pocket knife.
But if you maintain a certain level cognition and can still be held accountable for your own actions, then no one should be allowed to disarm you on principle.
If you volunteer to get mental health help you should be able to keep them period. If the government forces you to go get medical help then they should be taken after you have gotten to defend you position. Problem is have seen this be forced on people that had no mental problems to begin with just simply because a person with the authority to start the process didn't like the person or doesn't like their political ideals.
Its a very complicated topic. I really hate preventative actions because most the time they never done anything to anyone.
How can I shoot my mental problems out of other people's heads, when I have no weapon? You mean... not even possessing some hand grenades, too? That would be cruel, unfree, and to some extent even communist. I do not know what exactly it means, but it frightens me. And frightening stuff better is shot dead before I mentally need to deal with it.
I'm pretty sure if I was a pyscho I would want to let go of my mental support crutch. Beside if there was a brand new PM, I'd want to see how he went for a bit first.

ok but what guns are even still legal? in the UK they already banned most " guns " decades ago after a mass shooting in the UK , like what guns are still legal there? antiques maybe or on farms? i'm pretty sure there isn't even many guns you can legally own there unless i'm mistaken but pretty sure i'm not

Wanting a gun to use on other citizens is paranoid af. THAT is enough mental illness to stop you being allowed out in the first place never mind have a lethal weapon on you.
This was a thing in some countries in history. You know what happened? The definition of "mental health issue" got skewed to "people who dont share our ideology" as an effective way to disarm potential political dissidents
Who says they have mental problems? Who pays for an evaluation? Then there would have to be a system of appeals. Besides that would be infringing upon a persons right to bear arms which by definition means to own and carry
