Is dude a derogatory term that people use to put someone down?

I'm not a native English speaker, but I guess it would have a neutral meaning if used in the right context, and preferably amongst people your age.

I never thought of it as derogatory unless it was used in a sarcastic way.
It usually indicates kinship, familiarity or chumminess.
Like "Hey, dude, how's it goin'?" or "Dude, that was awesome!"

Not at all. It is just how some people talk. I use that term pretty often. It is likely more common among people that grew up in the 1990s.

It's just a nickname. Different words are used for insult. I call my close friends "dude."

For men it can be rather disrespectful if it's a formal setting or if you don't know him well enough. For girls I personally think it's better than 'bro'. I hate modern lingo...
