Is dude a derogatory term that people use to put someone down?

I don't know I don't have any feel for nuances of English language.
Dude is even translated inconsistently among languages I speak. In German it's "Alter" [Elder in sarcastic way] in Polish it's "gość" [guest or customer in sarcastic way]
For me dude feels sarcastic and a little belittling.

I'm not a native English speaker, but I guess it would have a neutral meaning if used in the right context, and preferably amongst people your age.

Interestingly, more than a century ago it meant a "dandy"—an overly dressed city man. (Google search)

i think it probably was in the past. if you look at where it came from. the dude ranch was just a generic term for cowboys. not the old west type, but ranchers. i can see it being used as fighting words because of this. cowboy and dude mean the same, but cowboys were wild and dudes were chill. that's how i think of it.

Definitely a go to word for a casual with concern tone.  "Dude, come on." "Dude, let's get out of here." " Dude, where's my car?"

It can be depending on how you use it. It can be used if someone's being annoying or an idiot But if I'm not mistaken, it originally meant "someone from the city". Travel educates

Not at all! Dude is super casual and neutral. It’s usually used just like man bro or guy Unless someone says it with a really aggressive or disrespectful tone, it's definitely not meant to put anyone down.

Like every word in the dictionary, it’s not inherently derogatory. But it can be used in a derogatory sentence. Being afraid of one’s own language is the opposite of enlightenment.

I never thought of it as derogatory unless it was used in a sarcastic way. It usually indicates kinship, familiarity or chumminess.  Like "Hey, dude, how's it goin'?" or "Dude, that was awesome!"

I don't know about these days, but back in the '70s, the term 'dude' was commonplace among friends. The term 'dudette' was equally friendly for the young women who were among my friends.

For men it can be rather disrespectful if it's a formal setting or if you don't know him well enough. For girls I personally think it's better than 'bro'. I hate modern lingo...
