Florida students are "forced" (required) to take physical education, English, math, history, and other subjects. So teaching students about why our country is governed in a way that is antithetical to communism is not "wild" or "off the wall," unless you are a leftist who is ashamed of our country.

While admittedly a drastic measure it’s not a bad a idea.


With a cancer as vile and detrimental as communism it’s important not to take its spread lightly.


Giving kids both sides and letting them chose is the wrong way to go.
Because communism is appealing to the young and impressionable.
It’s a fairytale about equality and happiness and being taken care of.


The reality is much darker and once it sets in it will be too late to dislodge it.


So yes, kids shouldn’t be lied to.
Tell them how evil communism is and make sure the next generation continues to live free

I’m anti-communism myself but to me that just sounds like more indoctrination or radicalized politicization of the average citizen or everyday society as a whole. This country is becoming insufferable with politicization as it is. It’s like political ideologies are becoming the new gang wars from the 80’s, one thing is to care another thing to be obsessed as a country in your day to day… very cringey indeed :)

@choco-latte I understand the concern about indoctrination, and I would oppose a curriculum that simply told students, “Republicans good, Democrats bad,” or demanded that students adopt my political beliefs.

But I don’t think teaching the history of communism automatically qualifies as indoctrination. Florida’s standards require instruction on communist ideology, movements, revolutions, propaganda, policies, consequences, and their historical relationship to democratic principles. They are also supposed to be age-appropriate and historically accurate.

Students already study fascism, Nazism, slavery, imperialism, wars, religious persecution, and other enormously political subjects. We don’t avoid those histories merely because studying them may lead students to very negative conclusions about the systems involved.

I’m strongly anti-communist, obviously, but I still think the proper standard should be teach the evidence: what communist thinkers proposed, what communist governments actually implemented, what supporters claimed they were trying to accomplish, what opponents experienced, and what the historical results were.

That is education. Indoctrination would be refusing students access to the evidence and simply demanding that they repeat a political conclusion.

McCarthyism involved accusations, investigations, blacklists, and punishment of people suspected of communist affiliation. Florida’s law requires students to study the history of communism—including communist movements, ideology, tactics, consequences, and its conflicts with democratic principles. The law also specifically requires the instruction to be age-appropriate and historically accurate.

Teaching students about the Soviet Union, Maoist China, communist revolutions, political repression, propaganda, and the historical consequences of communist governments is not the same thing as persecuting Americans for their political beliefs.

You can certainly debate whether Florida’s curriculum is balanced enough or whether particular lesson materials are too ideological. But simply teaching students the historical record of communism is not “McCarthyism.”

I support students learning that history precisely because they should understand what communist movements and governments actually did—not because I want modern Americans punished merely for holding left-wing views.
