Was it right that the NC School board is now forced to pay a student 20,000 over a freedom of speech violation?

Basically this student was suspended for using the terms "Illegal Alien" during an English class vocabulary discussion. This happened in 2024. The student sued, and won. The school board is now required to pay the student 20,000, Issue a public apology, and strip his permanent record of this as well.

Honestly i think its a victory for freedom of speech. We need schools to teach facts, not politics, not activism. If that had happened to my son, i would have done the same, though i would have also pushed for the teachers, and the principal to be terminated as well. Such a free speech violation is utter nonsense. I could see if he was being disrespectful to an individual, but he wasn't. and sorry the term "Illegal Alien" is not racist. No matter how much leftists try to suggest that it is.

As for freedom it isn’t free & as for freedom of speech sometimes it costs & in this case it cost the taxpayers, the filing party & the Davidson County Board of Education a lot more. As for C. M. v. Davidson County Board of Education I could only imagine how much the lawyers fees were. A $20,000 dollar settlement is peanuts but at least there will be a public apology & the students record was fixed.

I wonder if the teacher was placed on administrative leave?

It should have cost them more money. The only way to get these extremists to comply with the constitution is to hit them in the wallet as hard as we can. Every adult responsible for trampling this student’s rights should be convicted of a misdemeanor and it be on their criminal record.

i agree with fishbone here. (again). the principil does not care because it is not his money. the consequence needs to deter those who decided on punishing the student.

stuff needs to happen to such teachers when - like you said he was not insulting a teacher. what about if he called "a specific student illegal alien" . that would just be rude. get a reprimand not even detention! but being on the wrong side of politics! suspension?

This is good. There was a local kid that got suspended for wearing a t shirt that said "There are two genders". He should get in on this.

I doubt he was suspended purely for 2 words, he's just twisting it that way. I suspect he had been warned multiple times about being racist and told what terms we're not acceptable at school.

There's going to be one of two outcomes. Kids will now be able to use any racial slur or schools will bring in tighter anti racist regulations and words not permitted in school.
