I heard something about this is being worked on to pass. I dunno if just my state or everywhere else. I’m sorry I’m opposed to that. Felonies are ultra serious, many of those can damage a victim or worse. With all the shootings happening, I can fully see carrying a privilege.
Think now… would you be ok with someone diagnosed with split personality disorder or a convicted murderer having a firearm?

To my knowledge, at least in the U. S., convicted felons are NOT allowed to own and carry firearms. That’s federally illegal, so states can’t get around it.
Some states have a process through which felons who have paid their debt to society and demonstrated rehabilitation can petition the courts to restore their firearms privileges.
The problem with your take is that it relies on the altruism and pragmatism of a plainly flawed and even corrupt system. All they have to do is trump up BS charges and convict you, then they get to take away your guns. You don’t even have to be convicted of gun crimes. Any felony will exclude you in some states. We’re not even talking about WHO gets to do the deciding yet. I have a strong inkling that you wouldn’t want Drumpf deciding on your rights otherwise guaranteed by the US Constitution. Yet, as the chief executive officer of the USA, that is his right and responsibility. I certainly wasn’t in favor of Biden’s take on the second amendment. It’s fair to guess, like most issues, that this would split straight down party lines.
Yet here’s the part you’re only going to learn from nonpartisan constitutional law students and scholars: the Constitution was written to LIMIT government’s authority. The second amendment is meant to guarantee US citizens the means to fight back against a government that is exceeding those limits. Literally ANY legislation that disarms citizens is unconstitutional. Let that sink in.
Since most people, including law abiding gun owners, don’t really want to engage in shootouts with criminals or law enforcement, we have made some concessions. Criminals shouldn’t own or use firearms. I think it should be limited to people who committed violent crimes especially those using guns, but the mere act of brandishing a “firearm” is NOT violence. A man who uses a toy gun to steal $400 from a liquor store gets more prison time than a guy who uses a computer to steal several dozen people’s life savings. Make that make sense.
There is no “perfect” way to preserve the citizens’ rights AND enforce the law, but a complete understanding of why the Constitution was written the way that it was and using that information to prioritize citizens’ rights and restrict government overreach is foundational.
You start at “shall not be infringed”, every time. Then decide what compromises you think will empower you to protect yourself from criminals and a government that has already demonstrated that it has no responsibility to protect you.
Should someone with a mental health disorder be allowed to own and use firearms? Absolutely! Unless and until they have demonstrated a willingness and ability to perpetrate violence, their rights “shall not be infringed”. Once again, we’re back to “WHO gets to decide?”. We can’t trust the healthcare industry. A profit driven industry ALWAYS chases the money. NOBODY is perfectly sane in their world. Politicians? Please!
So who do YOU trust to make that decision?
I trust the founding fathers who had just finished fighting in a war against a tyrannical government. They chose to put liberty above temporary security.
I think they made the right choice.
Yes convicted felons may get their gun rights back after a certain period of time and by appealing to the board of corrections and / or governor of the state.
There are many felonies that aren't heinous in nature and have the ability to get gun rights back.
If they are down their time and followed the law afterwards I see no problems.
Some one with metal health issues is a different area and a convicted murderer (what and how was your murder committed). There are things to review and look at.
Felonies dosen't automatically mean worse crime. Most of the time its moving things in and out of different or multiple states so the feds get in so it's not double prosecuting people. You can do something stupid in federal land and carry out justice accordingly.
It is easy to conflate the higher stakes because the feds will take on higher level stuff in the news. It's ultimately whos responsibility is that area then anything else.
I agree, public safety should come first Gun ownership is a huge responsibility, and when someone has a history of violent felony convictions or severe unmanaged mental health issues, putting a firearm in their hands poses a real danger.
Currently no. Trump’s DOJ is going to change that. If you were jailed for a non-violent offense you’ll be able to purchase a gun again.
But right now… no felon can purchase or carry a gun.
it depends on the stste, I suspect a lot of democrst states will let illegal aliens have guns , They will let criminals have them too. If a citizen wants one they have to jump through a lot of hoops.
Anyone, in any state can get a fire arm easily. Side dealers just want your $
I live in a real moonbat state with strict gun laws. i know the local police chief and he helped me get my conceal carry permit.
Florida is a maga state and their laws are strict. You can’t open carry. Michigan you can open carry and it’s a purple state
Even if they’re not allowed to I’m sure it’s not hard to get a firearm in certain states so I don’t think that’s going to stop them Anyway if they’re going to use it illegally
Yes in limited circumstances. You have to petition the governor of your state to restore those rights.
I’m more concerned with lefty judges letting felons out on parole constantly.
Judges don’t determine parole.
To be fair, no one should be allowed to carry a firearm for the hell of it.
not like felons care about the law...
