I chanced upon the map shown, which highlights where Spanish is the majority language, but what I noticed is just how much each state is broken up into smaller parts. In the UK, we'd call these counties or regions. I'm not sure what you call them.
In the UK, some people refer to themselves as British, others prefer to use English, Welsh, Scottish, or Irish. But many break it down further to county level, e. g, Yorkshireman, Cornish, etc, reflecting the original kingdoms. Generally seeing themselves as British, just better.

Are some states considered less American than others?
I identify as a Michigander; born and raised in Michigan. Lots of people identify with the state that they live in or the one they grew up in. I don’t know anyone who identifies with the county that they live in or were raised in. A lot of people identify with sports teams in the way you’re talking about. It’s frequently a team that they belonged to or from a skool that they attended or one their kids attend. Sometimes it’s just their local or state team, but there are also a lot of bandwagoners who just choose a popular winning team. People identifying with their heritage is fairly common too; Mexican-American, African-American, Armenian-American, etc. There are a lot of people with a flag and/or the geographical shape of a country tattooed on their body. Come to think of it, state tattoos aren’t uncommon. Military personnel are often extremely loyal to the branch of service in which they served. They often refer to themselves as such and frequently exchange fun little jabs with members of other branches of our military. It’s much like the sports teams fanaticism in that way.
In the US it’s states and regions, a group of states.
My German ancestors landed here in 1749. My Scottish ancestors showed up around 1920. So I’m 106 - 277 years removed from our origins. My family has been in the melting pot for 1 - 3 centuries.
On the East Coast we have
New England
The Mid Atlantic States
The Southern States
Then we have the Western states like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado.
On the West Coast we have California and the Pacific Northwest.
In the middle we have Appalachia, the Midwest, The Plains States, and Northern States.
Hawaii and Alaska are separate cultures unto themselves.
American and then state and frankly, the state I spent most time in not where I reside.
Each area can have a dominant group.
I'll tell you this... some areas are really good.. friendly farm land, values... handshake level trust... until other people bring their cultures in and ruin it. People are the problem and solution. If you have $ you can move around here, but that doesn't mean you should. There should be a value test to move around to an area.
I think of myself as American. But when traveling or when asked, I often say I'm from California rather than America. It is more specific and California has a better reputation than America (USA). It avoids political controversy. When people think of California, they think of things like beaches, Hollywood and Disneyland, not national policy.
I'm from Hollywood California, and I'm pretty sure at least 85% of you mastorbated to something produced from where I'm from. I lived in Japan, before Pew die pie made it his thing... suck it. I don't even know why I'm talking still... I'm too awesome to keep talking. Did I mention you all can suck it?

I know a lady on social media from the UK. Once I asked her which country she was from, she declined to say and she said that she was from a particular county. She strongly relates to the county in which she lives.
As American. My home is in the state of PA in that top right county on the lake.
Within that county are districts that are divided up by different names. Most, but not all districts have their own police departments. They all have fire and separate school.
I think it is disappointing that the shipwrecked Spanish Armada sailors didn't manage to form enduring Hispanic enclaves in Scotland and Ireland.
For the sake of tourism, it can easily be made as it should have been, by teaching locals Spanish language and cuisine and to mutter Dios Mio in the street a lot.
Avoch, Black Isle seems to be the spot as they have Spanish Y chromosomes and it is not an island which would deter tourists without boats.
There is a big difference here between east coast and west coast; and also northern and southern regions of the east coast. Then again in a state like california there are stark differences between the northern region and southern. Of course inside each state are rich counties and poor, city life style and rural communities. Americans largely identity with their country and local community first and then split into fragments of religion, political, and cultural groups. Followed by shared interests
I normally identify myself as an American, and if more detail is needed, then an American from the Bay Area of northern California. I rarely have to add the details though.

American by birth, Floridian by the Grace of God!

I normally identify myself as an American, and if more detail is needed, then an American from the Bay Area of northern California. I rarely have to add the details though.
Those smaller divisions are indeed counties; my state has 105 of them.
