The industry is messed up here, the big corporation owned factory farms try to squeeze out the little guy and sabotage competition.
They lobby the government to keep things broken, to the point Donald Trump’s only solution is to get Argentinian beef as an import while letting American corporations with largest stakes in the industry go wild with it.

The US Government always prioritizes the richest amongst us, they won’t start caring now when it hurts one of their rich flock they have to protect another.
Large cattle ranches would mean more competition which isn’t good in their eyes since they have to look out for #1.

On top of that, Capitalism (at least America’s version) is small amount of corporations own everything and influence everything.
They control the means of production, the regulations that get passed (or lack thereof), deregulations, price gouges, prioritizing stock interests more than consumers, and cutting corners to save money all with the express purpose of maximizing making efficient corporate greed.

Cows don’t materialize out of nowhere. They have to be born and raised. Biden era regulations on the domestic beef industry limited ranchers on how many heads of cattle they could have. Drumpf repealed those limitations, but they can’t just start pulling fully grown beef cattle out of magic hats now. So the reduced tariffs for preferred trade partners will help supplement the US market until cattle ranchers can raise more cattle.

Because our our corrupt government is too busy wasting money fighting Israel's war against Iran, our government being corrupt didn't start with Trump, it's been corrupt for a long time unfortunately. Ideally, we'd relax certain regulations on US cattle ranches while imposing higher tariffs on imported beef that can be used to expand and help keep our cattle ranches from going under. Our focus should be ensuring out cattle ranches don't go under, not partisan politics.

Why not let incompetent ranchers go bankrupt? Our "Conservatives" want a free market economy? Fine. Cattle ranchers are government hating Conservatives. There are at least a dozen commercially viable alternatives to beef.

    • Chicken
    • Turkey
    • Duck
    • Bison
    • Beans + rice
    • Pork
    • Goat
    • Fish
    • Tofu
    • Shrimp
    • Mussels

Let the cattle ranchers compete or die off. Zero help from taxpayers. We don't need them. They need buyers.

This negativity isn't going to solve anything, beef is needed, and if US cattle farmers go under and our only option is to import expensive beef from other countries it's going to have a negative impact on the economy, there's a lot of fast food restaurants who can't switch to alternatives and will be forced to raise already high prices.

Apparently things are not so obvious for you. I just gave you 12 protein alternatives to beef. No one is gonna starve. If people stop eating beef due to the high prices, demand goes down and prices will adjust accordingly when idiot US ranchers can't sell their overpriced beef. If some private party wants to import Argentinian beef, let them do it. Or not. The US government should not be picking winners and losers and using taxpayer money to do it. Give these "Conservative" jackasses who voted for tRump and an economy in shambles what they say they want, a free market economy, not government welfare checks.

Things are obvious to me, @Kelly6 agrees. I never said any one's going to starve, I said it's going to have a negative impact on the economy, there's's a lot of fast food restaurants that rely on beef who can't switch to alternative protein sources or deal with the higher prices of imported beef. Did you say the same thing about the government picking winners and losers when Obama bailed out the auto industry? It wasn't just conservative jackasses who voted for Trump, centrist and Democrats helped get Trump elected, AOC is a great example of voters spiting the ticket.

Yeah and I said the same thing when the US government bailed out banks, hedge funds, and insurance companies during the 2008 real estate debacle. I've said the same thing about farm subsidies for years. I'll stop saying it when conservative morons stop demonizing a social safety net. I actually have no problem with government balancing markets in a crisis. I have a huge problem with "No Govamint" morons praising "Free Markets" while calling for the lynching of "Welfare Queens", but whining for agricultural subsidies for the farms and ranches they mismanage on an annual basis. They hate when anyone else receives help but they cry like babies and stuff their own pockets like entitled assholes when they need help. And they are either blind to their own hypocrisy or they see it and are too immoral to care. The US is anything but a "Free Market".

Cause trump got money from this meatpacking company. There's only like a few companies that do the meatpacking which is called a Monopsony. Which is like a monopoly but on the demand side. Where the buyers can set the price because the sellers don't have any other options. If you're selling like 1000 cows you can't just sell it to some guy on the street corner you have to sell it to someone who has a slaughterhouse and a meatpacking facility and can actually sell the meat on to supermarkets. And if there's few enough of those people they can just say I'll pay you this much take it or leave it. Trump doesn't give a fuck about U. S. farmers he just wants the beef price to go down before the midterm election so that voters are less angry at him.

Kelly, since you're from Spain, you're probably not aware of much that's in the Project 2025 manifesto, just like lots of people from the USA are not. This is part of an overall plan to eliminate cattle farming and make the public dependent on lab grown meat. Once you do that, you can more easily control not only what's in it, but the supply.

The whole idea behind the current administration is to bankrupt them, buy their land for pennies, build data centers and labs for meat making. That's their plan for the USA beef industry.

It seem beef production margin is lower than other products. Usually healthy market would regulate itself due demand and supply mechanic, but this is a market where middleman make 90% or margin, so the prices for framers remain low and prices in groceries remain high.

Meanwhile US is low on eggs, crops and everything. I think it's just speculations bubble to scam US folks.

Keep government out of private industry. The market will correct if regulations are removed.

If prices are high, cattle producers will raise more beef, which will decrease prices.

If Trump and the department of Ag feel the beef market is being manipulated in an attempt to bolster demand, then I think it's his job to step in and correct the situation.

Heard a cattle guy talking about this the other day. He said that it will take three years to overcome the shortage of beef production.
Till a calf is born and be able to reproduce to add to the herds.
He didn’t point the finger to anyone for the current shortage.

@Kelly6 What bailout are you talking about? FDR declared a bank holiday, forcing the banks to close, back in the Depression, but the US didn't bail anyone out. Since then, the US has assisted smaller banks merging with larger banks so that their depositors do not lose all their money.

@AviatorTom governments get involved because a country's ability to feed itself needs to be protected. It's generally considered too risky to leave entirely to market forces. Farmers can't just switch willy-nilly from one thing to another, if the government wants to protect the food supply chain then they have to support change. Both sides of the political floor know the public won't stand for a government that doesn't feed them.

You can fund all you want but it still takes the same as a human about 9 months for a cow to give birth. Then another 2 years before it’s big enough to slaughter. So the issue is time.
