I think parents can sometimes be more responsible for the breakdown of a relationship with their adult children, especially when they struggle to accept that their children are grown and entitled to make their own decisions. Some parents confuse respect with obedience and take it personally when their children begin setting boundaries.
At the same time, I don't think parents are always to blame. Adult children can be disrespectful, carry unresolved resentment, or expect their parents to be accountable for everything that goes wrong in their lives.
But here's what I think matters most. Parents have the responsibility of raising their children, and the way they handle conflict, criticism, and emotional needs during those formative years can leave lasting effects. A child who grows up feeling unheard or constantly criticized may carry that pain into adulthood.
However, being a parent doesn't automatically make you wrong, just as being an adult child doesn't automatically make you right. Both sides have to be willing to listen, acknowledge their mistakes, and take responsibility for their actions.
Personally, I believe the parent who refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing can make reconciliation especially difficult, because healing cannot happen when one person insists they have nothing to apologize for.
Ultimately, age doesn't determine who's right. Accountability, empathy, and a willingness to change do. ❤️
Probably the parents are wrong more often. They have old opinions that are hard to change.
