Inglewood High School Principal Debbie Tate issued the statement on Monday, saying that her school's team did not conduct themselves "with sportsmanship or integrity and the final score was unacceptable."
"Our administration and coaching staff believe that athletics should be a source of pride for our community. While Friday's game did not reflect our best judgement as administrators, the Morningside High School and Inglewood High school football players, and their coaches have worked hard all season and deserve our respect," Tate said.
School district officials said they are "saddened beyond words" in regard to the game's score and will conduct an investigation.
"We will conduct a full investigation and take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that a similar outcome never happens again under an IUSD athletic program," county administrator, Erika Torres, said in a statement.
Inglewood High School's quarterback is UCLA-bound and passed for 13 touchdowns in the game. The team scored 56 points in the first quarter, and by halftime was up 83-0.
The most controversial move came when Inglewood's head coach went for a two-point conversion when the team was already up 104-0, tying Hilo High School in Hawaii for the highest-scoring high school football game in the last five years.
Fallout from the game blew up on social media where Dick Vitale agreed with Collins. "How can the Coaching staff of INGLEWOOD HS California feel good about themselves?" the legendary sports announcer said on Twitter.
"SICKENING & a DISGRACE to the Title of COACH! Congrats on teaching good sportsmanship. U SHOULD BE FIRED!"

When I was a young kid, probably 8 or 9 years old, I started playing football. My team not only lost every game that first season, not only got blown out most games, but we only scored ONCE all season. We never lost 106-0, but I think we lost like 56-0 once. And you know what? We showed up to practice the next day, and we did up-downs right after stretching, one for every point scored on us, every week. Nobody yelled at the other team. It’s not their fault we sucked, and they shouldn’t play down to our level. Some kid might go to college because of that game, get his name noticed by a scout because he scored six TDs or ran for 350 yds. Some good can come out of it. And I’ll tell you this, as an athlete myself, there is no greater disrespect you could show me than taking it easy on me. I’d rather lose 106-0 than lose 42-0 because you took out all your starters after halftime. That hurts my pride WAY more than getting blown out for four quarters.
There’s a lot to learn from losing, because life is like sports sometimes, and you’re going to suffer defeats and have to be gritty and resilient and power through it, even in the face of more defeats. And someday, life might really hand you some REAL shit, some 106-0 type shit, and you’ll be glad you have that resilience in you, fortune forbid you ever find yourself in that kind of scenario.
The real problem is summed up in the article. The other team came in knowing they were going to lose.
The winning team had one "star" player. Now I'm not into American Football, but in the UK when I grew up playing rugby the team may have been lifted somewhat by a good scrum half but no win or loss was because of a single player. If you have a team of 15 on the field it's down to the entire team.
In general, if a team has been told repeatedly to the point they go in "knowing" they can't win they tend not to. If they are drilled into "knowing" they can't lose their performance rises.
The winning coach isn't at fault or "unsportsmanlike" for playing the best team available to him. The real issue is the belief that delicate little egos need to be wrapped up so they understand that everyone is a "winner" instead of learning the life lessons that not finishing on the podium teach.

They got beaten. Maybe their next game should be against the last superbowl winners so they get perspective.
No, he shouldn't be fired for doing his job, but I am perfectly fine if people wanna call him an *sshole for a while. Win the game, but no need to embarrass the kids on the other side of the field.
The whole concept of "running up the score" is so American, and frankly, ridiculous. Anywhere else, *not* trying your hardest to win would be seen as disrespectful to your opponent (it's basically a form of taunting, which is unsportsmanlike). If anything, it's their opponents who are at fault, for giving up.
Obviously, the smart thing for the coach to do, would have been to put on some backup players once the game was out of reach, to give them a chance to gain some experience and to avoid risking injury to their starters. Not doing so is hardly a sackable offense though - and that's not really what anyone is complaining about.
@MuddyMole Agreed. I have done martial arts on and off since I was 3. My master always taught me that the loser learns more than the winner. Him and his daughter were the only two in the entire class I could not match. Him I understood because he was the master, but getting trounced by her repeatedly was frustrating. However, during one of our spars she decided to forfeit as she saw no point in us sparring. That pissed me off because she was implying that all my hard work would never pay off. Yes, losing sucks, but there is a lot to be learned from it. Taking pity on your opponent denies them their chance for growth.
Why they won by so much? Maybe because the other team sucked. I fail to understand why that warrants an investigation. Maybe they should look at the losing team to find out why they got their asses kicked by so much.
Only in America's "every child gets a participation trophy" culture could the winning team be subjected to disciplinary action simply for winning. If we taught our kids how to lose gracefully, we might actually end up with a lot less entitled people running around.
This should be a learning experience for the losing team, and nothing more.
No he shouldn't be fired, and the principal shouldn't have apologized. Forfeiting/quitting and "letting up" doesn't teach anyone anything. Winning is earned, not handed out like welfare. Sports are a microcosm of life, and life is rarely fair. A participation trophy society is a soft society.
why the fuck would he score that many points when the other team scored none? and here's why.
1. Risk injury on your own team. this is the biggest reason. when you're up that much it makes no sense to keep trying so hard. Unless they stopped trying and the other team just let them score.
2. Rule 1 would be enough for most professional teams to start playing their bench and the score would slow down dramatically.
3. This is highschool. you're destroying the other teams spirit, and in the end that's the only thing you want to teach your students. Is get them into a healthy competitive/school spirit. That was not achieved in this football game.
Now whether or not the coach should be fired is depended on the trust that the school has for that coach. If they find that the coach is malicious and he did it as some kind of joke. Than yeah he should be fired. But it certainly was highly incompetent.
Here's my question did he empty the bench or was he playing starters till the end. Because while I don't think he should be fired in either case. To me that's the difference between unsportsmanlike or not. These are kids not paid professionals. Yes you do want to instill values that'll carry these kids throughout their life. But what are you teaching them if you don't have them do their best. That's why when the game is no longer in peril of being lost you bring in the bench and bench the starters. It's good for everyone.
When your team is badly outscoring the other team, that is the time to put in your poorer performers. It gives them the opportunity to gain needed experience and to feel good about themselves for being part of the winning team. Your team would still win by a large margin, but it would be far more sportsman like than the way the game turned out! What is to investigate? The coach was dead wrong to do as he did. Punish him in some way. Perhaps suspension.
Unfortunately no. In high school and college, you're ranked, based on how badly you beat your opponent, they're trying to show they should be number one in the area, if not the state. That just sort of proved it.
Even if it was the pros, they wouldn't fire them. In the pros, a wins a win, regardless of how bad they beat up the losing team
I don't know anything about this game except the score. Usually in this situation coachs put in the players that seldom get on the field giving them some game time. Possibly all the players on the winning team were better than the best players on the losing team?
No he should not. Whether it be martial arts or sports, taking pity on an opponent is seen as condescending, arrogant and a sign of disrespect. By ending the game early or slowing down effort just because the other person/team is getting trounced, you are saying they are not worthy of the respect it takes to keep playing your hardest from start to finish. By continuing to give your best effort from start to finish, you show respect to the opposing team.
If he left his starters in after getting an insurmountable lead, he should be fired. His players could gave gotten hurt.
It's definitely poor sportsmanship and teaches the wrong things to his players.
He should definitely apologize to the other team, their fans, and to his own players. Whether he should be fired is a decision to be made by his school board. I'm guessing they won't fire him.

The coaches could have agreed to a forfeit, but I doubt the losing coach or even his players would have gone for it. The winning coach should not be disciplined, but hopefully he put his second-stringers in to give them some experience.

People who are outraged about this are the same kind of people who've never competed in their life once. Trashtalk and teasing the other team is as normal as it gets and part of sport. If you can't handle it, better not compete.
Something crooked was obviously going on. You only see a score like that in video games. Someone was cheating or getting paid or some BS about a college admission.
If you can lose a football game by over a hundred points, then you probably shouldn't be playing in the first place. And your coach should be fired, not the one for the winning team.
