Learning how to defuse a situation or walk away is the best method. It is so easy to get seriously hurt in a fight and sometimes throwing the first punch is what decides it - not how strong, tall, or experienced you are.
Now, for an actual answer about martial arts, then become familiar with jiu-jitsu or wrestling and boxing. There is no ultimate martial art, since it depends on the situation. If you become familiar with those after a year of training, then you'll feel more confident at handling yourself.

Wrestling, preferably freestyle or greco-roman. Nothing hits harder than the concrete. After that a good judo/jiu-jitsu school that trains for street fighting. Slamming someone into the concrete while staying on your feet is very effective. If you want to throw in some wing chun knee stomps they work to.

Streets aren't good at any type of martial arts.
