Why is it that people always want to get the last word in when having an argument on the internet?

Pride, ego, and arrogance. By getting in the last word, they "beat" you in their own mind. "He / she yielded first, they gave up, I win!"
Some people do this for fun. Some people cannot accept a blow to their ego and do this to protect it. Some are so arrogant that they cannot accept people who think differently from them, and will fight them to their dying breath to prove they are "better" than you. And, some people are just assholes.
The unfortunate nature of the internet is getting to see the dark, secretive side of humanity in all of its raw, unfiltered glory as these types hide behind the anonymity of the net.
I think people work out their aggression and anger that way. Anytime people are essentially anonymous they act out. That is why asshole drivers are so rude on the freeways-they think they are anonymous
it makes them feel better plus they think they're right

When you can't win, and you're stupid enough to think winning means whoever speaks last wins, you adopt this strategy.
Weak minds which flip their views as the wind changes, are also going to be swayed by whoever speaks last. Since weak minds often think there's no such thing as being smart, they naturally assume any audience is as malleable as they are. You know what smart people do when they realise they are arguing with a moron? They get out of there.
I'm not sure it's so much "needing the last word" as it is that usually people always say something that requires a response (or feel the need to comment back to). But there are some people that just love to argue, even if they know their wrong. Just childish and immature.
I've legitimately learned things in certain online debates but a lot of people dont take criticism of their ideas well these days sadly and also dont actually read what each other posts.
That is mostly a liberal trait. A right brainer will repeat and reply to the end mostly based on emotion. I like to take it to a stumble on their part and then drop it; thus the reason for anonymous.
because facts are never enough to sway the opinions of the ill informed ;)
because you are always remembered by your last word.
Because it means they "won"
It's not the person, it's the ego.
l dont l just walk away
