I do believe some cases social media addiction can be a real problem. In an article "User behavior" it states
"Eyal helps his clients mimic what he calls the ‘narcotic-like properties’ of sites such as Facebook and Pinterest. His goal, Eyal told Business Insider, is to get users ‘continuing through the same basic cycle. Forever and ever.’ In Hooked, he sets out to answer a simple question: ‘How is it that these companies, producing little more than bits of code displayed on a screen, can seemingly control users’ minds?’
The answer, he argues, is a simple four-step design model. Think of Facebook’s news feed. The first two steps are straightforward – you encounter a trigger (whatever prompts you to scroll down on the feed) and an opportunity for action (you actually scroll down). Critically, the outcome of this action shouldn’t be predictable – instead, it should offer a variable reward, such that the user is never quite sure what she’s going to get. On Facebook, that might be a rewarding cat video, or an obnoxious post from an acquaintance.
Finally, according to Eyal, the process should give you a chance to make some kind of investment – clicking the Like button, for example, or leaving a comment. The investment should gradually ramp up, until the user feels more and more invested in the cycle of trigger, action and reward."
So yes, I believe it will destroy some peoples lives. Much like online gambling and Loot boxes can seem derisory when we are talking about addiction I don't think we should over look these things. Look at Grant Amato who killed his family over a webcam model it clearly shows people can develop unhealthy habits despite it not being a substance you take.

+1 yI would say yes it's messing things up. Like right now, I'm answering this stupid question. I spend more time reading and answering and asking questions. But we crave attention or give attention. It is common is it okay? Need to learn to balance our time with reality. We cannot be fixated. When was the last time you sit down and had a real live conversation with somebody without typing or texting? When was the last time you actually read a book? When was the last time you actually learned something? Actually wrote a letter to someone? When was the last time you actually went out and sit in a pub and enjoyed somebody else's company? One nice thing about gag it gives us the opportunity to hide our identities, to block those that we might have pissed off or hide because some asshole decides to pick on you.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yNo. Because regardless of whether I'm online or off. I still live in reality.
I was reading an article about how many companies are investing heavily in the METAVERSE. Because it's predicted based on the way humanity is headed that. In the future half of our lives will be spent in the metaverse. People will not just unwind in the metaverse. People will live and work much of thier lives in the metaverse. Ever seen the movie "Surrogates" or "Gamer"? It's kind of like that.

+1 yNope.
I watched a video talking about it years ago and the guy basically said it's not reality, because your'e looking at someone else's life through a keyhole and it's easy to do that, compare it to your own and get depressed because you think your own sucks in comparison.
Due to that partially, I make a distinction between that and reality and I almost only use it for watching videos TBH, whatever random stuff shows up.

+1 yAt first, I believed that social media would ruin my life but got into it anyways since everyone had it. I expected the worst but now that I've had social media for a year or two, its actually really fun and enjoyable. It hasn't had any negative effects on my life.
On the other hand, I understand and believe that social media is damaging to many individuals because of how cruel people can be behind the screen.00 Reply
+1 yNot at all. I use social media in moderation and I'm the one who controls my social media my social media doesn't have any control over my life.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yYes absolutely. I have wasted so much time losing brain cells and watching dumb videos, getting into arguments with people and getting blocked by easily offended people when I could have spent that time learning, perfecting a new skill, working out, or whatever else.
00 ReplyNah. It gives me glorious content to use, but never have I had such a feeling about social media. I don't tell my business and i barely care about anyone else's, if anything at all.

Opinion Owner+1 y@SueShe that's what they keep saying but it's a forum, not social media. GAG only asked for my email address. No phone number, real name or other personal data other than birth date and gender.

Interesting concept. Besides GaG, I do not have any other social media and therefore, I am unable to ascertain whether your statement is true or not. However, I am really wondering if those people having accounts on other traditional social media do indeed give their real names, real phone numbers and other real personal data.
Opinion Owner+1 y@SueShe i sure don't. I prefer my privacy.
Their private life can all be read just from those social media profiles alone. This is also where the police first looks at.
