Should tech companies be held responsible for forced updates and verification that results in loss of life?

A friend of mine needed me to record him on the phone because he felt he was being followed by people that meant to do him serious harm. I asked him to describe out load what they look like, Car plate numbers etc. Voice recorder refused to start before performing a 8 min update. Tech companies have no right to do this. Who the hell do they think they are? Isn't this reckless endangerment?

With commercial software hardware and applications, there is an element of ’Quidquid (tu) facis, tuo periculo facis’.
