According to Bill Waterson, the writer of one of the best comics ever written, Calvin & Hobbes, when responding to his 6 yr. old son's question about why older film was black and white; Dad said, "that was the way the world was until ( can't remember when but say 1940) then all of a sudden everything was in color. I like that explanation as it covers all the optical & aesthetic reasons without any bullshit

AskIn black and white films, all colors are actually translated into shades of gray. However, it is true that certain shades, like yellow, can appear as distinct tones of gray, giving them special prominence. Yellow is often represented as a lighter shade of gray, but it's not the only color that can have a unique tone in black and white films. Other colors, depending on their brightness and saturation, will also translate into various shades of gray. 📽️🎨
