I buy a mid range one but my girlfriend always eventually gives me the newest iPhone or something because she’s materialistic. The only tech I spend big on is my computer.

For me, it's a moral question how much money I spend on things that need to be replaced quickly. And smartphones aren't replaced because they're defective, but because apps are becoming increasingly sophisticated and smartphones don't receive updates for as long as they could be programmed to. Manufacturers want to sell new devices quickly. Is it morally acceptable to spend so much money when other people in the world are starving? Of course, everyone decides for themselves what to do with their money. For me, a smartphone is not a status symbol, and I don't need an expensive device. I need a device that I can rely on and that does what it's supposed to do. So I try to buy a device that is as durable and reliable as possible, but not overpriced. I pay for long-term use, not for the brand name printed on the product. Why some people feel the need to surround themselves with expensive things that cost more than they should is a mystery to me. I'd rather go out for a nice meal than spend too much on a device.

I have a midrange google pixel 7 that i bought years ago and it's the best phone i had i dropped it, slept on it and not a single scratch on it yet. My old Samsung galaxy note 9 was cracked in less than 2 years. My security updates are good until 2027 so im still good for another year before it's time to start looking for new phone deals.

Expensive smartphone. I've had my current phone for over 5 years now. I rarely buy a smartphone because I get the most expensive smartphone that will last for a long time.

I buy, when needed. And when possible, I get "new old stock." A previous model that is still in the box. My last two, iPhone SE and iPhone SE3, cost me a total of around $250.
