Is CLOUD storage absolutely necessary to have on my cellphone and what does it do?

I keep getting messages that my CLOUD storage is full and I have to pay $10/month to renew it.
What bad things will happen to my cellphone if I don't pay for CLOUD storage?

All smartphones are equipped automatic with backup of your data on gmail, onedrive, or on apple cloud.
It's clear that you have a lot of pictures and videos on your phone that were backed up automatically on cloud storage.

If you don't want more storage, you can ignore the message to buy more storage and clean up your phone by removing all unwanted pictures or videos.

I just don't want to spend $10 every month for something like that.
My photos are old but I want to keep them of course.
I don't have any videos stored.
My storage from my settings is at 22%. Is that different from Cloud storage?
If I don't pay could they delete my photos?
I hate dealing with this stuff!!

Cloud storage is limited... What's on your phone will stay on your phone without any problem

I have an old GSM phone, so I don't think it's even necessary.

I don't like using cellphones anyway.

Just download what is on the cloud to an external hsrd drive or flash drive and it will be empty then.

I don't have a computer and I am not very tech savvy.
I just got this phone and it's brand new.
I didn't even know I had cloud. Do they just automatically put it on my phone?
My friend put her pictures in CLOUD storage and then she couldn't find them.
Is this a scam? Do I have to have it?
