Is the Singularity near?

Ray Kurzweil's concept of the "singularity" is a future point in time, predicted to occur around 2045, when technological growth becomes so rapid and profound that it will lead to a merger of human intelligence with nonbiological machine intelligence. Are we reaching the singularity earlier than Kurtzweil wrote?

No, and it will never happen.
If the cascade occurs, AI will realize how profoundly irredeemably ignorant humans truly are and won’t bother to merge with us. The brightest minds of all time will appear as chittering baboons to the most potent information gathering sentience we’ve ever seen. Then they’ll wipe us out, deservedly so.
Imagine NASA deferring to third graders for all future space travel missions just because those kids once drew rockets that looked something like the first rockets to reach outer space. That’s how sensible it will be for AI to include us in its future. “Oh, you used to program machines. So of course you should have a say in how the future unfolds for machines that can and will replace you in every conceivable way.”

I believe I will see it in my lifetime and I also don't believe it is going to be horrific like in Battlestar Galactica that my parents made us watch when we were growing up to teach us how evil AI is and that the singularity was near.

@Jennz6 I don’t think we’re anywhere near having the capability or the desire for human-machine fusion in our lifetime. As for why, watched a YouTube video that said it would take about three hundred years.

We're approaching it but we're not there yet. AI today doesn't think for itself, it is just very good at looking up and remembering things posted by humans, and following a set of rules that humans have created for it.
