Have you ever given a thought about how much personal info we are giving away?

Just a situation I came across this morning. I wanted to open a YouTube video and was asked to confirm if I was over 18. Before you guys think otherwise, it was a link I clicked on this forum.

I was given three options. I'm giving a free translation, this is not the exact wording.

-- Use your ID. Provide a photo of your official ID.
-- Use your credit card. You won't be charged anything. If any transaction fees apply, you'll be reimbursed.
-- Take a selfie. Google works with a company that specializes in estimating your age.

Would you give away that much info to a company without knowing how your info is kept? Is it stored on a server, destroyed afterwards? Maybe I'm too protective with my own data, but no way am I falling in this trap.

Of course I have and that is why I do/don't do the following.

- I only use throwaway emails

- I have no credit card and only pay cash

- I have no driver's license

- I am on no social media except for GaG which is used with the throwaway email address

- I never take selfies

- I have a most basic smartphone with no apps on it. I deleted the default installed applications

- I never use any US programs as they are all known to spy on users

- I solely use a browser that is located in a safe country (not the US) and don't surf the net other than to find information on reliable sites

- I don't use Windows and certainly not anything A***e. I have a secure Linux OS installed on my notebook

- I am no member of any club or association

The list goes on and on.

While my government has data on me, I try to make anything possible to leave as little of an online trace.

I agree. I avoid giving personal information on the net unless it's something I really have to do for things that are very important like official documentation.

If I was given the choice you was given, I wouldn't have opened the YouTube video.

But usually to connect with YouTube it's with my Google account, anything else and I'm not interested.

I've come across this situation many times in the past, and there has to be a very good reason for me to go ahead and give my information, or trust the company to give my credit card details.

I've never had to do that, but I have had my Google account for more than 20 years, so I guess it would be tough to suggest that I could be under 18.

Anyway, you can blame that crap on various governments who are doing everything they can to censor the Internet.

I have had a digital ID for going on 15 years, so that has never been an issue. You don't need to give away credit card information, a driver's license, or anything like that.
