Back in the days of film, every photo had to be properly composed so as not to waste a single exposure. With digital, the only limit is the capacity of the card. Take a few hundred photos and if go back to your hotel room and delete 298 of them, no big deal.
It is all about perspective that how u see your frame to turn out after you click... i have this hobby too and i take all kinda pics

They're everyday to YOU, not everyday to tourists
I've travelled to several countries, so I know what it's like to be a tourist. Trust me, I wasn't taking photos of stairs and walls when I traveled. If it was a historical site, I'd take a pic of the whole thing. Not random telephone poles.
Maybe they are into architecture?
