Why do some people take photos of everyday objects when they travel?

I see a lot of Instagram accounts of travelers, who photograph stairs, walls, or telephone poles in the places they travel. My question is, why? If you're traveling to a beautiful place, why not photograph the people and scenery instead of mundane commonplace objects?

This photo on someone's Instagram is from Japan, but you wouldn't know because it's so typical and mundane. Their account is full of photos like this. Why travel and post on social media if this is what you're gonna photograph?

Back in the days of film, every photo had to be properly composed so as not to waste a single exposure. With digital, the only limit is the capacity of the card. Take a few hundred photos and if go back to your hotel room and delete 298 of them, no big deal.

I've travelled to several countries, so I know what it's like to be a tourist. Trust me, I wasn't taking photos of stairs and walls when I traveled. If it was a historical site, I'd take a pic of the whole thing. Not random telephone poles.
