What are the best and worst countries for a young, single woman to travel alone in?

Now that things are opening up more I want to travel more. As a single American girl every time I say I want to go somewhere people tell me I’m going to get kidnapped, raped or murdered. Are people just being cautious or trying to scare me?

Places I want to visit are: South Africa, Morocco, Brazil, Thailand, Cambodia, Russia, Egypt and someplace in the Caribbean like Jamaica or the Dominican Republic.

The all seem fun and beautiful and maybe most important, cheap. Between hostels, camping and backpacking even someone like me on a student budget could see the world.

In all of that time, have you done even an hour's research on women traveling alone to these places? Many of the ones you listed would give you less than a 50% chance of surviving.

Yes, many of these countries have amazing natural wonders, and even interesting cultures, but the politics, crime, and religious extremism in some of the places you listed are like nothing you have ever experienced. And if you think you can show up and expect people to respect your human rights, you would be in for some very brutal lessons.

If you were to try to complete that list, I would say that your chances of being robbed or swindled are about 90%, being raped about 80%, being kidnapped and trafficked about 60%, and being jailed about 50%. You literally have zero rights in many of those places as a foreigner, and in some, as a woman - much less an American. And I'm guessing your daddy isn't a Senator, so if something bad happens to you, the US government will just shrug and say "she was an idiot to go there, especially alone. We can't help you."

in my opinion, you seem to be intentionally naive about the situation you would likely find yourself in, which tells me that you would do nothing to prepare yourself, and you would quickly mess up and offend the government or some group in power (crime gangs run a lot of those parts of the world at the local level), and you would assume that the worst thing that would happen is a ride to the police station before they would let you go. In fact, the police in many of those places are completely corrupt, and you could be blamed for crimes that someone has been looking for a scapegoat for, and you might not even get to tell your side of the story. Remember, you have no rights in many places, and you would make a convenient scapegoat for many crimes - even crimes that were committed against you!

There have been at least a half dozen women who tried to travel the world alone like that in the last 10 years, and most were found dead. Two managed to escape after being gang raped. Hell, that could easily happen to you in the wrong areas of Paris, or Sweden. But South Africa? Brazil? North Africa? Islamic countries as a white girl? That's not far from outright suicide.

It would be different if you were in a group of 20 people with 3 locals for security, but alone? You must be crazy.

South Africa is one of the most dangerous places in the world.

Arab counries like Egypt are dangerous for women. Lots of human trafficking go through southeast asia. Russia is no picnic and is mobilizing for war.

The world is not a theme park. If you want to travel, Japan, the US, Northern Europe, italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, most of south and central america are probably fine.
