Lakes (as a general rule) are more placid than the ocean but since saltwater is more dense, you're more buoyant than you are in lakes so you don't have to fight to stay afloat.
Although some places like the Dead Sea give you the best of both because you're buoyant and the water's placid. Meanwhile, in the Great Lakes you'll get the worst of both because they are quite turbulent but you'll sink in them like you'll sink in any other lake.
