The best way is to go to youth hostels. Not everyone is the same but some of them have a great vibe and meeting people and making friends is easy then go out and try and make friends with locals too most will be happy to tell you things and show you around. When I went to Korea I had some Korean friends that I met in my own city I showed them around and then they helped me when I went to Korea. And in India my long distance girlfriend lives there so she helped me. You can also have a good time by yourself in my opinion but meeting people definitely gives it an extra dimension.

+1 yAvoid anything that's bang next to a tourist attraction. You don't have to travel miles, just look for places that aren't obviously chasing the tourist coin. If anyone ask why you're in town just say you're at a conference or something.
It's worth doing a bit of research to see if there's any cultural events going on locally too. Another trick is to find the main "sit down" area. Every place has an area people gather in to sit and watch the world go by and they're a good place to chat to the locals or just sit and people watch.10 Reply

1 yWhen I deployed I would go the other direction of my Shipmates. I would find local places famous for their food. I would find English speakers and we would teach each other our languages better. I would enjoy the company of the locals.
Have an open mind, be a learner, do NOT attempt to change them, but enjoy what they have to offer and you'll have the right mindset.00 ReplyGo with huge shipment of spices and cotton, rubber, artifact's, Diamonds and Gold, and let them know, You are the only Person protecting it!.. and no Cops or Any other authority is helping you, and if they Loot you, It belongs to them. They won't even have to return it!..
