Are people in the US North and West Coast much nicer and friendlier than US Southerners?

People in the US South, particularly the Caucasians, tend to be grumpy, cantankerous and not too friendly.

People in New York City, Massachusetts and California by comparison, are always smiling and will talk to you.

Though the friendliest and nicest people in America are Midwesterners.

Then why don't Southerners ever smile or look cheerful? And why does it take years to make one single friend (man or woman) there?
