Looking at the colors, the top 4 states are:

California
New York
Florida
Texas

which are also 4 of the most populous states.

What do you think of this map... and where rich people live?

California doesn't surprise me at all. I mean that Hollywood is there and celebrities live there.
There are very rich people who live on the beaches ⛱️ of Malibu.
Also the cost of living is very high.

There have always been very rich people living in San Francisco on Nob Hill where the homeless people are not living.

So much of California has expensive properties and at one time, Marin county was the most expensive place to live in the nation.

The house that I grew up in is just an average or below average house but it's worth over a million dollars now.

My boyfriend from high school is living in a house worth well over a million dollars now. Who would have thought that my boyfriend, the pot head from the 70's would be living in a house worth over a million dollars?🤔

Nope. It's a beautiful state, with perfect weather, orange groves, vineyards, fine dining, beaches, surfing, National Parks, theme parks, tons of stuff to do... It's a paradise, if you have money, of course, and don't mind the rush hour jams. I know people knock it for political reasons, but seriously, if they've never been there, they need to check it out and leave their cynicism at home. I love Cali... <3

It costs a lot to live in California and it costs even more to live safely in California. I am not surprised

You are not completely wrong about this, but it's not as lopsided as you think. People who live and work in California get paid a lot more than they do almost anywhere else because the prices of almost everything here are a bit higher, although not dramatically so. This in turn means that the pay scale is different than it is in other places. This is not necessarily a negative thing as we have nice stuff but it seems negative to people that live in poor red States.

@Kingofkings1992 I live in the most expensive place to live in in the lower 48 states. Taxes are my biggest expense by far but electric rates are the most expensive as well. Insurance premiums and heating oil are also a lot more. then you have to eat. 100K does not buy what it used to.

Since it's the most populous states, then it's logical that they're there. They're also in temperate states, except New York can be cold. But it has NYC, which is a great place, so it's a great draw for entertainment.

I can give you an idea.

Compare a modern home or living space or condominium in California or Florida or Japan (or even in Thailand as they are selling currently such homes) with cutting edge architecture, utilities and amenities VS the soviet commie blocks from something like 1980, that look like they were built in a rush and neglected the quality of life things e. g. bare metal sinks, boiler in each apartment, extreme economic expenses and the buildings look like they'll be crumbling slowly over time.
And then there are the favelas in south america. Don't get me started with this one. But I'm sure you're wise enough to know what I'm talking about and I'm probably not wise enough to understand "affluent people per capita".

To me the former is at the beginning of being rich but it's a matter of perspective of course.

It should not surprise you - we here in CA have the most beautiful scenery of any state in the US (with Hawaii being the equal). We have a world-class coastline, beautiful mountains, and gorgeous cities. What's not to like?
