Where I live there is a bridge that has two decks. . The lower deck does not bother me. It has a roof and there are lots of cross members on the sides. It would be pretty hard to crash through one of these and go into the river. The top deck just has a guardrail that is about 4 feet tall. It is pretty high off the ground as well. I will get in the middle lane and try not to look down. There was a local celebrity on TV who was talking about the bridge and he said that he does the same thing.

There's a bridge over here that's really tall called the Vincent Thomas bridge. It's the one that the film director Tony Scott jumped off of to kill himself and goes over the port of Los Angeles. I used to think it was cool driving over it as a kid with my dad. When I drive over it now I get the willies. I think to myself "oh man, fuck this shit!" The surface of the road is about 200 feet above the water.

Nope. Florida has lots of water... lots of bridges... I can't think of anything more normal. It's actually comforting to be driving over bridges with scenic views of water. It feels like home.

It's just part of Florida culture to spontaneously jump in the car and drive up the coast hopping from the mainland to the barrier Islands bridge over bridge from one island to the next over inlet after inlet watching the boats pass by. Each time checking out the surf with the salty air in your hair. Maybe you're chasing waves up the coast to go surfing. Maybe you're just randomly getting lost on a weekend to find a new restaurant or walking on a new beach. Maybe you're going fishing at a pier or going snorkeling or scuba diving. Bridges are all part of the adventure.

hubby drove up to the Stelvio Pass… at some point I had to just close my eyes … watching those buses and motorcycles ziczacking through took my heart out.

driving in the US, bridges, I do daily… not a big deal. I love driving… it’s fun and easy. I used to just drive out for fun or drive my kids to Florida 2 times a year by myself. Watching drive bridges pulled up…and other fun activities like storms with no GPS then watching double rainbows appear after the storm.
I’m surprise I’m still alive. My gfs call me crazy. Because they are scare to drive at night alone.

For us, we were 1/2 way up, we had to stop and let our tires rest up… the rubbers smelled like burned rubbery. Other cars stopped to take breaks as well. Once up there, the view was amazing!

Used to drive over the Oakland-SF Bay Bridge all the time, double decker, lower deck into Oakland, upper deck into SF. 6 lanes each direction. Easy peasy. The only ones that are a little trippy are the ones that go over water and the road surface is a metal grid, but I love stuff like that. Also used to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western NC. Now there's a challenge... even more fun in the snow although they would shut the blue ridge pkwy down in mid winter anyway. Ya get used to it.

The only part of driving over a bridge that scares me is the other drivers coming from the opposite direction. They are afraid of the edge and split lanes. If it’s a 4 lane bridge, they push the left lane into oncoming as well. It makes me nervous that someone afraid of the side of the bridge is going to cause an accident.

Yes, I drove up a mountain. There was a road built going up the mountain it is only one lane. It is one way goin gup and another one way road going back down.
The road has the mountain on one side and nothing on the other side. It is a pretty scary ride.

Not for me. I luv it! The center lanes of the Mackinac bridge in Michigan are all grating. You can look straight down through it and see the lake below. When you’re driving, the grating blurs and it’s almost like looking through glass. Quite exhilarating!

Nah!! I drove over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco when I was alone in the car and only 16 years old. I thought it was cool!
I also drove the San Francisco Bay Bridge almost every day because my husband worked at Treasure Island and I had to drive the bridge to visit him or pick him up from work.
It's a walk in the park! It's, it's a piece of cake 🍰

THIS was a scary bridge. Almost three miles long, across the St. Johns River, eventually replaced in 1963. I remember crossing that bridge with my family, when I was perhaps 6 years old, thinking that I was going to die.

Only high bridge near me is just 40m high. Driving over is easy, I think the greatest risk is from other drivers rubber necking to admire the view.

It actually collapsed once, I often think about that when using it

It depends on the bridge. There are many bridges with low guardrails... those scare me and I try to stay as far from the edge of the bridge as possible. Some bridges have lattice decks, which can also be scary, since you can look straight down at the water.

Occasionally I have found it scary driving over a bridge. There is a two lane bridge over the Mississippi on US 49 that is pretty high. After playing poker all night in Tunica, that bridge scared me.

I have also felt this occasionally on the Megler Bridge across the Columbia at Astoria, Oregon.

I've never been worried driving over a bridge, though when I was a kid, a bridge in Minnesota that we had driven over less than a week before collapsed.

You never should be afraid of driving or walking over a bridge. I say that with confidence. I’m a union ironworker my brothers and I build them along with high rise buildings and other things with pride, blood and Sweat. So don’t be afraid feel safe next time your on or in one or the other of these.

My anxiety definitely goes up, but that's due to the fact, that it is hard and dangerous to shift multiple lanes, if there is any engine problems... if you even have the option of a shoulder to get onto.

UK here. I've never been scared driving over a bridge in my home country, as they don't tend to collapse. Our building regulations are very strict.

@DrPepper12 I just remembered this. I worked in Cincinnati for a few weeks. I was staying in Florence , Kentucky because there were no hotel rooms available in Cincinnati. I went out with a girl and we had to drive over the bridge over the Ohio river. She climbed in the back seat and hid when I drove over the bridge.
