I’m gone few times on a long road trip with a motorcycle group, we ride to Portugal and had lots of stops in between.
Might go this summer too.

If 1000km. is a long distance ride? I have done several group rides over the years. They have ranged in size from 3 up to a couple dozen riders. Personally I don't care for the larger group rides. A group of 2 - 3 riders is my preference. Other then that I would sooner ride solo then in a large group.

@Iron_Man Not everyone who rides a Harley is going to join a motorcycle club. I did for a while, but we were just a group of friends hanging out together. I know a few people who are member of the Hells Angels. They all have one thing in common: they are all extremely generous and have a big heart. Just don't mess with their bikes, that's the only rule.

Certain groups are more a gang than anything else. But most are legit.

If you count a round trip of about 480 miles to be "long distance", then, yes. That's plenty long on a Nighthawk. That was... 28 years ago I'd guess? While I do miss riding, I was almost run down three times within a month, and I decided I had tempted fate and Bay Area drivers for too long already, and I sold my bike. I used to fly into Phoenix when I had a buddy who lived there, and I mostly rode his bike when he was at work and I needed to go someplace. That was 20 years ago now and I don't think I've ridden since then.

This is my buddy's very custom Suzuki GSX-R 1100, which I dubbed the "LightCycle" because it accelerated like something out of Tron. It didn't TURN like a light cycle, but then it didn't need to. But that's the problem with an insanely powerful bike - you'd be "just cruising" and you'd look down at a speedo reading 110 MPH. If I had his bike in the Bay Area, I definitely would be dead - it's way too easy to abuse the speed and there are way too many bad drivers here.

My old Nighthawk was plenty fast enough without accidentally doubling the speed limit, and was certainly more comfortable to ride. You wouldn't want to ride a sport bike 500 miles - hell, even 100 miles would kill your back. But they are fun for short rides!

I have. It was usually a weekend outing, starting on Friday afternoon and lasting until Sunday. We would either sleep in a hotel/motel or in a tent on a camping site. Or we would set out early in the morning and make a round trip that took us back at night. We would typicall do about 400 km a day.

Our group was about 12 bikes. We knew each other quite well. That's necessary if you're going along the highway in a group, not too close to give each other enough room, but still close enough not to get cut off by cars.

These days, I prefer to ride alone, with my partner at the back, or with one or two friends. I'm not into big group rides anymore. There's always one or two who drink just a little too much. I'm more interested in a relaxing ride nowadays. And getting home safe.

I want to get a few buddies together, that have sporty cars, and do a road trip or something.

A friend of mine is looking to get a Nissan Z this year or next, and we’re talking about driving out to the coast and up to his cabin and crashing there for a night or two. Some great scenic drives out that way… would be a lot of fun.

They are not intimidating as such, but you need to take it easy as a rider. Slowly build it up. I see so many beginning riders do all sorts of crazy stuff. It's just not worth it.

But you do need a lot of confidence in the rider if you are going to be the passenger. The few times I got on the back with a friend was completely different.

That is a very old motorcycle club and I think most of those guys are probably dead by now.

No I can't say I have, because I've only owned small motorcycles, and they would be worn out quickly on long rides, and they didn't have the speed for distances.
