An Open Letter To Terrorism

An Open Letter To Terrorism

Dear Terrorism,

Hi. You don't know me, I'm just one of the 1.8 billion of faceless teenagers in the world, a world you seem to be hell- bent on destroying. You're a hundred-headed hydra, and when we cut one head off, two more take its place. Some of your more famous heard are the IRA, who were involved in the Irish Revolution, Al-Qaeda, who orchestrated 9/11 and brought down the twin towers, the Black Hand, who sparked World War I, which in turn led to World War II, and ISIS, which has been responsible for terror attacks all over the world, and now controls many parts of the Middle East.

Like most teenagers, I've grown up with you. Unlike previous generations, terrorism is all I know. I was born shortly before 9/11, and cannot remember the twin towers, or a world where lax security is the norm. Yes, you were definitely there before I was born, as there were terror attacks dating back to the Irish Revolution and the World Wars, but you're more frequent now. You've seen me stare at the TV during Boston, San Bernardino, Orlando, Brussels, and France, twice, as you committed acts of terror. You seem to be omnipresent, always there, lurking. You make the adults worry, you make them scared to go outside, want to do all they can to shield themselves from the harm, because they remember a world where this didn't happen, this is new to them, a change. To them, you are an angry, snarling beast with sharp teeth, waiting to rip them apart.

My generation, however, is a different story. Yeah, the adults tell us that nothing will happen to us, that no terror attack is going to happen to us. We know better though. The people of San Bernadino, Paris, Boston, Brussels? They didn't know that they would be attacked. We aren't safe, none of us are. You probably think that creates fear, but you would be wrong. See, when you know that today, you could be shot and killed, bombed or murdered in cold blood for no reason, that today could be your last day alive, you start living differently. There's no "let's wait for a better time" because we know that for us, there might not be a better time. You make us think what is important and what is not, and make us act accordingly. We don't live in fear of you, you don't hold us back. To us, you are a beast with no teeth, we don't fear you anymore.

An Open Letter To Terrorism

Many people say terrorism won't go away, it's always going to be there, but that's not true, and this isn't just me be optimistic. In order for terrorism to exist, you need us to fear you, for there to be terror. That exists now, as the current generation in power, the one that our parents are part of, is scared of you; however, when my generation comes to power, you're fucked. You'll be wasting your time and energy, men and supplies trying to frighten members of a generation that cannot be frightened by you anymore.

Just let that sink in.

Think it over, let it really sink in,

You created what is ultimately going to destroy you. You've dug your graves and given us the gun to shoot you in. By continuously trying to terrorize us, you created a generation who is unfazed by you.

Even if you try and continue to terrorize us, wasting time and energy, men and supplies, we will be your end. You will die at our hands, whether it be you withering away from lack of reaction to your attacks, or us picking up weapons and destroying you. With death looming over our heads, why not bring you down with us? If we're going to die, we'll make sure to go down kicking and screaming. The absence of fear makes a dangerous man, because the fear of death cannot stop him.

Thank you, for creating a generation that is learning to live it's life to full potential, and thank you for creating the generation that no longer fears you.

I hope you're proud.

Sincerely,

The faceless 1.8 billion
