Not sure which progressive GaG member you are referring to, but I get it.

I honestly think they hear the criticism/argument regarding remakes and what they show with companies like Disney when it comes to being progressive by doing representation or acts like this. It shows pandering, creative bankruptcy and ironically racism as well.

Disney has always been known for its timeless classics being their animation from Snow White, to Cinderella, to The Little Mermaid, Bambi, Lion King, etc. These were all given to us by a man who created animation for an living and has now become a staple in American culture and internationally with what he did. While based on stories written already, he brought them to life with a concept that was fresh and new at the time and it could still be considered original.

Now you see all of these movies getting remakes with live action. We could argue that they are doing what Disney did by trying to re release them for a new generation to enjoy, but those of us that grew up with this take issue because now we see established characters being changed for more modern viewing or world views and issues.

So let's use The Little Mermaid example here. Why did they feel the need to remake a movie that they already have as an animated classic that already established Ariel as a white redhead to be replaced with a black actress with red hair? That makes no sense. Why not stay congruent with what was established? Is it not racist to replace an established white character with a black one? Would it be considered racist if it was the opposite by replacing Princess Tiana "The Princess and the Frog" who is black to white in a live action remake? If so, that is a double standard. We can erase established characters if they are white, but not of another race? To go with that, how many black women have real red hair? They already get flak for having fake hair as it is, wouldn't this also be more degrading asking them to change themselves further to fit something not known to them?

I am POSITIVE they see this, but they don't think it is valid or relevant. Create something new. We have represented other Disney princesses as different races. We have Jasmine (Mediterranean/Middle Eastern and she is arguably the best one), we also were given Princess Tiana (Black, The Princess and the Frog) like I mentioned earlier in 2009, Mulan (Asian, 1990s version). Regardless of their popularity, they are distinguishable because they are the few that don't follow the white ones. Hell, they could make a new princess and she will more than likely be accepted with open arms regardless of the race, just get competent writers that know how to tell a story and actually know how to write a good female character that doesn't push the toxic feminism shit as a "strong female" and they will be golden. Challenging? Yes. Rocket science difficult? Fuck no.

Remakes are an excuse for easy cash grabs because it requires little effort and most of the work is done. Just different things to be adjusted be it live action being taken into consideration. Which they have used to push progressive ideals and follow representation which, shocker, causes backlash for reasons I stated above.

It's certainly confusing. I've never commented on any other forum about except for this one, because I really dont give a fuck what they do with the little mermaid, but I can totally get why people are upset by it. It's not just some random fictional story. It's been steadily famous for decades. When you spend so long selling movies, tv shows, toys, having people dress up like them at your theme park, people are going to get attached to that representation. It becomes a pop-culture icon. It reminds me of what happened to the Sonic movie a couple years ago. Fortunately, sonic isn't human, so no one was able to pull the race card when they changed his image.

Why is everyone so mad about it? The movie is targeted towards children and children seemed pretty excited about it. Half of the people hating on it are not the targeted demographic anyway. Disliking the new Little Mermaid film can be for a reason other than bloody racism. I haven’t seen it, so I can’t really state my feelings on it. Good Burger was an excellent film, probably the best on Netflix, and its two main characters are both Black.
