3 things can redeem this imho.

1. Knights of Ren. They can still be built up over 20-30 mins of screentime into vicious, evil monsters with a large effect and big characters. Kylo sucks as an antagonist currently, too much Twilight fussing and bullshit making him "likeable"/highlighting sex appeal to teens, but maybe with his cadre he can be relatively dark and imposing instead of a whiny brat with the keys to the kingdom. I just see space Joffry currently.

2. Poe Dameron. I think JJ likes him and if he can develop and lead the scenes a bit more, I think he's probably the best actor in these movies. There are a couple of spoilers that also come under this umbrella so I won't say too much but it's the same point, a new focus and direction in characters can refresh the stinking bog we have currently. Over and above that, sorry but can we have some aliens? You know? In this galaxy "far, far away"? Some aliens. Please. No not more human ethnicities. Fuck off with that shite. That's here, I've travelled plenty, don't need a forced reminder there are other colours of the species on the planet I already know quite well. Aliens please, new species of life I come to a sci-fi flick for aliens, not humans.

3. Action. Ffs. ACTION! Lightsaber battles and duels, starfighter dogfights, space and land battles, it's Star WARS!!! Wars. I know they claim Rogue One is the top army/battle-based Star Wars movie but I call bullshit, Episode 3 and even Episode 1 have more battles. Probably episode 5 and 6 as well actually. Let's get back to that. There's a reason we're Star Wars fans. Stop fucking with the formula. Twilight failed miserably for a reason. Stop trying to be Twilight.

What do you reckon, what do you want to see to reclaim/save this dying franchise?

All of this retconning wouldn't any more fit in with the general established 'theme' of the movie. It's my belief that they should scrap this thing and, if it is absolutely necessary to make a Star Wars movie, make something from scratch and set it in a more distant future where all of these events are just some weird mess that no one knows the full history to any more.

Dumptruck and the Giraffe are failures throughout the movies, in-character by their decisions, and out of character as actors, and they're scarily irrelevant to the ending's plot. They'd never be missed.

As for the retconning, look at the Old Republic. People LOVED it. No original characters. Then the EU, the Yuzzhan Vong and later stories. Basically no original characters. People adore it.

Just busting loose and creating something new would always be preferable. Even if it was Prometheus levels of shit, at least it gives new fans a leg to stand on when they're fighting for their tiny piece, the fact it's artistically original and in surplus of principle.

I think that's somewhat superficial. I didn't like Rose in the movie because of how she was written but the sister dying in the beginning made a valorous sacrifice and it added to the drama of the opening that they were trying to fuck up with that stupid "Hello, are you there?" joke.

I think a big part of it was that they were trying to sell the movie to Asian audiences which as why the had Ngô Thanh Vân kelly Marie trans in it, which they've done in other Hollywood films but Ngô Thanh Vân is a fairly heavyweight star in Asia and much liked Kelly Marie Trans is largely seen as basically a fat American woman in Asia which resulted in poor ticket sales. At least that's the theory.

I’m actually kind of glad a short actress actually got a non cannon fodder role for once. Kelly is only 5’2” while the other actress is 5’7”. I personally think Kelly is cute while Ngô is hot.

Unfortunately the director basically turned Rose into a female “short round”. I think this is why many fans have been giving her a lot of hate. Let’s just hope that Rose doesn’t become the next Jar Jar binks.

plus I'm mainly upset with the storyline of the new movies. The side movies like Solo are amazing but the main story is not that great. I love most of the cast like Rey, Finn, and Po. I don't feel Rose is a necessary role because I'm sure Rey and Finn get together so she serves no purpose.

Luke Skywalker. The boy. The man. Our first and most highly enduring introduction to this beautiful, epic, powerful saga. That scene. Where he faces Kylo Ren. A sombre tone. A battle that lasts at least 5 minutes. He can die. But give HIM a proper send-off, as a badass, a true Jedi. Give US a proper, powerful, engaging duel. 2 samurai. Knights. Locked in noble combat, blade to blade, ideal to ideal, heart to heart.

Give us that. Be genuine and address and acknowledge our needs. And personally I knock the rating up from a piddly 1 to a mediocre 5. 4 if it's not great. I wanted that moment and it would literally have saved the film from disaster for me. Carrie Poppins and bullshit Old Luke and fatass Tico and fakeout Snoke and horsebunny politics and the crappy casino and fakeout Phasma and... well anyway, all that would have been less painful with that one scene.

@Rodgerinho personally, I disagree that even that would have helped. Nonsensical planning, forced characters, completely nonsensical space combat, characters not staying or being consistent, Jesus Leia and on and on.

Also, Luke himsel shouldn't have even been on that island. Hammil even said that that's not what Luke would have done. He'd maybe take a break for a few months, but not become a hermit with a wish to die.

And his confrontation with Kylo shouldn't have happened in the first place since the real Luke would have never risen a lightsaber at the kid just because he sensed "some" evil in him, when years prior he literally helped redeem the second most evil man in the galaxy.

So, I'll keep to the point that, not only do the individual scenes of the movie mess it up, but the entire premise does. The only way anything could be fixed is by a complete and utter remake.

Still, it's also a masterpiece and a vital piece of film-making. It may well be the movie that kills feminist, political bullshit in movies for good! 😄

Because we're looking long-term, the wider game at large, it's a trilogy not just a sequel, there IS the possibility of a successful return to form and expunging of the rancid, delusional filth we were given.

So I say it would have been amazing, past tense, but also it can be amazing, future tense.

Eh. It won't be amazing but at least if it gets to Clone Wars levels I'll give it a pass and get my hopes marginally higher for the next Disney attempt at Star Wars

I've liked the franchise but it does not deserve this treatment, and with Fisher's passing, Ford's departure and unwillingness to participate and Hammil's displeasure with the direction, they completely squandered the chance to tell a decent epilogue for the original series where all the characters are older and wiser. That is now gone and making a star wars movie from a blank slate just for the sake of it is pointless.

Disney has proven that they are creatively bankrupt. Any new movie will be the same thing but repackaged a bit differently - but the end goal is to sell the toys with familiar imagery, meaning we'll still get the analogue to stormtroopers, we'll still get the AT-ST analogues, the Death stars, the triangular spaceships and, of course, lightsabers.

Rich from Red letter Media summed it up pretty well - the Star Wars universe, the way it was built, was never meant to expand on what was already made in the original movies - you have all of the aforementioned things (didn't include Jedi and Sith) and that's pretty much it.

Star Wars is creatively bankrupt, and it shows even more with this recent direction.

I mean, apart from the crappy new characters, what exactly was new in the movies that was not anything derivative of the originals? Spaceships were just repaints, Star Killer base is the Death Star, that new rolling ball robot is just a newer R2D2, the Resistance (which shouldn't exists) is just the rebellion, the First Order (which shouldn't exists) is Just the Empire, Snoke is the Emperor, and on and on and on.

You make a good point. Fast and Furious and Transformers both follow exactly the same format with minimal variance and we're talking about a pair of franchises that combined outpace even Star Wars' movies.

People know what they like and repeat business is far more prevalent when a customer's needs are met.

To be fair the prequels were VERY different to the originals. No smugglers, no gangsters, no secret monk in the swamp/training montage. The focus was primarily Jedi/Sith, politics, and war.

Then throw Canto Bight off the set into a trebuchet and off into the sun.

The Last Jedi, it DID break with tradition and try something new. It just did something boring instead of something fun.
