I mean, you literally can't do anything nowadays without people crying "racism", "sexism" or "bigot" so I'm not really surprised. I still think she could have easily just cosplayed the girl without painting her face since I've seen many black girls who cosplayed white characters and didn't paint their face. And who knows, maybe she didn't even know what she was doing was going to hurt some sensitive people on the internet. Not everyone is educated on everything happening in the world.

I would rather Twitch ban annoying Twitch thots like Alinity.
It's not mocking a race, or even the character, it's the complete opposite, so I disagree with the ban, or with anyone that considers this offensive. It's not.
But they don't ban streamers who shower their tits lmfao, twitch is a joke.
My account got perma banned for having "ass" in the username

She didn't have to paint herself black.
From 1958-1978, there was a show in the UK ran called "The Black and White Minstrel Show" where white people would paint themselves black to mock black people. It was supposed a "comedy" but there was nothing funny about it, it was extremely racist.
That picture, made me think of that show.
Now I don't know if it was intentionally or unintentionally offensive but she should have been more considerate and not painted herself black.
This was a guy doing Fresh Prince cosplay who was white he didn't give himself a black face:
This black girl was cosplaying snow white and she didn't give herself a white face:
This girl should have been more considerate of peoples feelings about this kind of thing.Disagree with the ban.
The offence of a loud offended minority of self-appointed inquisitioners has the same sort of flaws as the puritan bible-thumpers.
Should outraged Christians get to ban internet posts that mock christianity? Didn't think so.
Your personal feelings do not determine the morality of an action. If you think that they do, then your self-important arrogance should have you shunned by your friends.
Talk of the history of blackface serves only to show why some people are offended--a point which I already addressed as inconsequential.
To say that it demeans black people because of its history is wrong too, because it depends on how she is intending to do it.
Seems like she's cosplaying as a character because she LIKES the character--not mocking the character.
Just because you find out something you did yesterday has a racist history does not mean that you were suddenly morally wrong.
This whole blackface outrage is moral posturing to claim superiority on the virtue of being offended.
You know you've met a person with few achievements if that's what they resort to in order to gain significance.Although I think what she did was wrong, I don’t think she should’ve been banned.
I’m guessing she didn’t know it was wrong, because reading up on this apparently she’s from Lithuania. I don’t know anything about Lithuania, but I don’t think blackface was really a problem in that country. If she was from the U. S. it might be a different story, but to me it just seems like she was naive.
They should’ve just warned her not to do it again and left it at that. Also I believe she was only banned for 30 days, right?Wait, what the fuck? People are getting triggered over this shit? Seriously, the world needs to chill the fuck out. Its a cosplay, and some people like to take it to the extreme. Just cause she went blackface. WHO gives a fuck. Racism will not fade, when people like this, keeps doing shit like this. Calling it out as a racist thing to do. That's what I'm taking from this. Is she racist now? Nope, just trying to cosplay. If I wanna cosplay fucking SHREK. I'm going to paint myself fucking ogre green. Otherwise, I will be some knock off ogre with skin disorder.
When it's for a character that is from a type of media like a game or movie or TV show then I fail to see why it should be a problem. The definition of dressing up as that character for on cosplay is that you admire and are a fan of the character... She is showing her interest and love for the character by going out of her way to go through the trouble of dressing up like the character.
I don't understand why people have such an issue with this. If I decided to dress up as Jackie Chan because I'm a big fan of Jackie Chan does that make me a racist? Racist for my appreciation and respect for another human being? Which happens to be of a different ethnicity.
My black friend dressed as Cinderella, a French girl, and no one thought anything of it. It's appreciation of a character. That is it.I'm know I'm going to be downvotes but whatever.
Well I think banning her is a little extreme as a warning is more than to advise her not do it again.
However !
A person's skin colour isn't a costume. I understand that a she wants to be accurate but there was no reason to try and paint her self that dark.It sounds as though Twitch needs some rational people on its Trust & Safety team
They are a gamer site yet they react extremely negatively when some one dressed to portray Lifeline, but they see it as her doing 'black face'. It would have looked even more odd if she had tried the portrayal with her natural skin tone.
If they carry one like this they will have to do the same for anyone portraying a character from any of the games.
She should have received a warning not an outright ban, somebody at Twitch is way to twitchy.
But its funny how no one got their knickers in a knot when two black actors 'white faced' to portray white girls in the film of the same name - the only differences they are black, she's white, they did it for a film, she probably did it for a cos-play party.I'm very likely going to get backlash and a lot of thumb downs for this I am so confused white people get so much backlash for doing things like this but it is perfectly ok for people to do whiteface like you have a black actress playing Ariel whose character is white I just don't understand why it's okay for them to do whiteface but you can lose your job if you do black face even when there is no ill intent behind it
I don't know her at all - My first question would be how aware she is of potential fallout - It could range from blissful ignorance to I will get loads of attention from this or stir a lot of shit/get name recognition - The platform's attitude do they react like this at lot, if it is common knowledge then presumably girl knew what she was doing - Unfortunately unless we get the whole truth, we will never know and it will fall into the grey area of many issues, it depends on your views how you interpret it
skin color should be treated like a style of clothing in this instance. Would she be disrespectful for dressing as a character who is African American?
A lot of women tan to make hem sleeves look darker or wear lighter foundation to make themselves lighter. Is this offensive to lighter or darker women?
This is silly. Unless she was mocking African Americans there is nothing wrong with this.
And even if she was, the issue wouldn’t be the black face- it’d be her actions.No. People that get butthurt over stuff like that should be prevented access to the internet by their parents
Twitch is wrong... invoking a ban on her for that especially when their platform has been brought into existence by gamers. I understand being socially responsible but, we all need “understanding “ before such harsh measures did they ask her intent? Even if it was clear as day what it was intended for don’t let “ignorant based racism “ stop your growth as a company. Your core consumer are those who knows what she is doing.
I don't think she should have been banned, but... Cmon she really didn't need to paint herself darker just cause of that.. Its insensitive really.. She knows the climate today.. She could have just put ththe customer and whatever other style of the character on..
The reason people are usually offended by the blackface thing is because Hollywood used to do it all the time to avoid hiring actual black people. It became symbolic of the systemic racism in which nearly all of the US, since 1776, just plain refused to pay black people to do any work.
For something like this, though? I dunno. With the racial wage gap I suppose it is still a bit too soon, but I (a white man) don't really have a problem with it, myself. No I do not agree with it, but I also think Twitch, game streaming, and esports as a whole are stupid and have made a lot of games not fun to play anymore because people take them too seriously, and they've gotten too commercialized.
It would be one thing if she was trying to make fun of a race of people. There is zero harm in cosplay.
It's also worth noting that you could easily make the argument that every character in that game is an offensive stereotype.I think black face controversies are wildly overblown. Black face was purposely derogatory to make black people look stupid which I don’t think was the intention here. But on the flip side, why not just dress in the costume instead of doing the makeup. Like would I really need to wear black makeup to dress up as black panther, no. Would a black person have to wear white makeup to dress up as captain America, no. I think the makeup is over doing in my opinion but I have no problems with her costume. Nothing looks offensive or depicts black people as bad or stupid so I think the ban was unjustified.
I don't know Twitch and I don't know Apex Legends.
If she just did imitate an existing character in this legend, then there should not be a ban. However, if she made obvious fun of someone of even an entire ethnic group, then it is justified. No, she should be allowed to do that. Black face as it pertained to American minstrel shows was very racist but in the international sense I don’t think it necessarily carries the same connotations. An international streaming service imposing a flat out ban like this over the American sense of outrage we culturally have about blackface doesn’t sit right with me.
Unless she was also acting with the cadence of a minstrel show and being racist as fuck with her words. At the end of the day its about intent. She did it as part of a cosplay, not to insult.
I agree with the ban. There's nothing wrong with her wanting to portray the character if she likes it, but she shouldn't do black face.
She clearly doesn't know what's the problem with blackface.
