Happy St. Patrick's Day!!! Is anyone celebrating? How many are IRISH?

NO!
Yes, I'm full blooded Irish who grew up around Irish culture my entire life. Not one of those 'Muricans who claim Irishness yet the only connection they have was 8-9 generations back.
Haven't celebrated St. Patrick's Day in years. First of all, it's mostly Americans who care about it. Second, it's been appropriated, mocked, and bastardized throughout time and used as an excuse to go party or get drunk rather than celebrate the life of the Saint in a religious manner. Makes me throw up when I see little Leprechaun souvenirs and "Kiss Me I'm Irish" t shirts in places like Wal-Mart. People don't have a clue about the history of Ireland and the suffering we went through underneath the British Empire.
Lastly, I'd rather not celebrate the life of a NON-IRISH man who forcibly converted the Irish Celtic Pagans, the original Inhabitants of the island. The Irishmen who joined him in that task were basically traitors to their own kind.
I ESPECIALLY don't want to celebrate it this year with the Ukrainian/Russian war going on. They call the Irish Freedom Fighters (IRA) terrorists when they defended themselves against the Brits but then have the gall to call the Ukrainian soldiers "heroes" for protecting their land against the Russian. Bunch of hypocritical gobshites.
Just a smidgen.
Sea, tá am breá agam. Tá mé i mo chónaí in aice le Dún Pádraig agus chuaigh mé suas ansin chun féachaint ar an pharáid a bhí go maith. Mar sin féin ní raibh mórán cóisirí ann, ní cheiliúraimid é chomh mór agus a dhéanann áiteanna eile. Seans go mbeidh sé níos gnóthaí thar an deireadh seachtaine áfach
Thanks Paris! Happy St. Patrick's Day!! I don't celebrate this day since I'm not Irish.
You could if you wanted to! We wouldn't mind. :)
@Jamie05rhs No, that would be disrespectful. I hate cultural appropriation.
@Jamie05rhs Thank you! I'm glad you do. :)

Can't say that I am.
The majority of humans have at least 3 different faces
one face that everybody see's and recognizes as you as a person
and a different face that you only show to people you love and are familiar with and feel comfortable around
Then there is the last face that only you can see... it's the face that identifies all the subjective imperfections inside and out
Guess which one is also directly connected to your self esteem... if you guessed the one only you can see then you're right
The last one has a tremendous effect on the other faces as well
The trick is to understand that if you let the 3rd face determine things like what you think other people see when they look at you it will also effect how you see yourself and that can go both way's good or bad
So take control of that ( 3 face ) and remind yourself that people only see the face that you let them see
What was the question again?
Be confident in who you are and accept yourself because as long as you the rest is nothing more than fine tuning the little things
I'm over 80% Irish from an Irish Catholic background. All my ancestors immigrated to the U. S. in around 1850.
My wife and I friends are with a couple who are really, really into St. Patrick's day. The lady is of Irish background with the last name Dooley. They have more Irish decorations than some people have Christmas decorations.
They used to have a pot luck party every year. We'd feast on corned beef, cabbage, carrots, colcannon, scones, Irish bread pudding, and the works. Of course, there were drinks like Smithwicks and Guinness, as well as Baileys, and Irish whiskey.
For a good 15 years, I played a half hour long set of Irish rebel and pub songs at large ceilidhs on St. Patrick's day. There were other bands, Irish dancers, etc.
I play guitar and sing. I would cobble together a band consisting of accordion, mandolin and/or Irish banjo, penny whistle, a harmony vocalist and maybe an extra guitar. I always play one waltz called The Black Velvet Band that people loved to dance to. I would include one melancholy song, but most of them were that kind that the audience could clap and sing along on the chorus. I'd even have 100 or so fliers passed out with the lyrics.
Here are a couple of samples:
No ceilidhs in 2020, 2021 or this year because of the covid nonsense. They were fun while they lasted.
🍀Happy St. Patrick's Day! I love St. Patrick's Day!🍀
I've always wanted to go to Ireland. I've had friends who have lived there and others who have visited and they all seem to love it there. I have a little Irish in me, but I remember hearing about the life and stories about St. Patrick and I found them to be really intriguing.
I enjoy celebrating it with different foods and drinks that are either green or Irish. There's a really good cheese that is from Dublin that is like a strong cheddar.
Irish decent , but its not really much of a thing here in Thailand , I will be watching the Saints v Pies ( AFL ) in Aussie sometimes I used to go to a bar on St Pats , but its not really a thing for me , and Im trying to decrease the intoxicating beverages , it seems to be an excuse for getting blind drunk , I dont enjoy that these days.
I am not religious and dunno who Saint Patrick is nor care to know so nah I don't celebrate it, then there are weirdos who celebrate Saint Patrick date without even knowing who is or what it's about which I find funny.
And yeah I am Irish from my dads side but nor him nor I care about it. Not one who cares to have pride over a ethnicity.
I am American but have a lot of Irish linage.
We do celebrate at my house. Had some fine Irish whiskey and a 25 year old cigar. Had guests. Made corned beef and cabbage among other things. Played Irish music. St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays.
I don’t really do anything to celebrate saint patty’s day. When I was a kid my mom used to take me to see the parade but that’s it.
Im part Irish and was also an Irish dancer for like 10 years so around this time I would be dancing in the parade myself or doing a lot of shows.
Today I have to work so I won’t be able to do anything even if I wanted to. Im gonna be wearing green tho lol
*SIGH* "Patty" is a diminutive of Patricia. It's PADDY for the male equivalent of Padraig/Patrick.
@Wraith_Cemetery whatever lol
Paris, all i see in the US (where i live) is Americans from Irish grandparents most of whom are not like the "real" Irish people you'd meet back in their old country by any means ( I have been there a few times ) ... Hell, the ones here in the US get disgusted when i talk about Football (real name for Soccer), Prefer Budweiser over Guiness, and don't care much for the Irish Whiskey. Hardly anything Irish about them at all, but it's a good excuse for them to go out on days like this and get drunk and make fun of the real Irish drunks!
I’m half Irish. Currently on two weeks active duty for training with the National Guard, sitting in a 2 1/2 ton truck ferrying whatever needs to be hauled to troops in the field. Food and water on board, but no alcohol.
Nope. Not me. Cross the Irish Sea and that’s where my people are from. Cymru am byth!
I so probably be drinking green beer tonight, but nothing major. Not Irish and my Irish friends are states away now
My neighborhood bar happens to be an Irish bar. I'll probably stop by for a jameson, but this being their busiest night of the year, I probably won't stay long.
Yes, there’s irish in me. We aren’t celebrating much except for eating corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day don’t forget to have some Irish stew
I’m part Irish!!! But I’m not celebrating, never have my family don’t really bother 😂
Almost half Irish! But I’m not really doing anything today
Hey- same here! I'm 3/8.
Omg no way! I’m actually exactly 37%! Pretty much exactly the same
@sunflower00 Wow; nice!
I have not a lick of Irish in me... None of the luck comes with it either 😅 But I love how fun they are and funny too.
There is not an Irish bone in my body but I will be eating corned beef and cabbage along with everyone else. It is yummy.
