Jimmy Carter, former US President and Governor of the State of Georgia, who also won a Nobel Peace Prize, and was known as a peanut farmer in Plains Georgia, has died at age 100 on 29 December 2024.
May he rest in peace.
What do you know about him and his legacy?
Mr. Carter was a good and decent and moral man, but he, quite brutally, a lousy President. Both things can be true and the latter does not, in any way, undervalue the former.
Obviously in his post-presidential career, former President Carter made enormous contributions to various charitable and humanitarian causes and even, when asked, continued to contribute to the nation's security and political life. In part assisted to the personal friendships with the men who succeeded him in the White House - including Mr. Reagan.
Indeed, in this he stands in sharp contrast to the current occupant of the White House. Mr. Biden's track record as President is as bad as history has judged Mr. Carter's to have been. The difference being that to this Mr. Biden has added a taint of bitterness and vitriol and even petty corruption. (See also his dealings with his less than stellar son, Hunter.)
Yet it cannot be lost sight of that the Carter presidency was a failure - hence that he only served one term. Under Mr. Carter, the rate of inflation hit 14.5% in 1979 - the highest ever in peacetime. Then in 1980 it hit 13.1% - the only time the USA had back-to-back years of double digit inflation in peacetime. This then pushing the prime rate of interest - the interest rate banks charge to their best customers - to an eye watering 21.5%. (This ultimately inducing a recession that would drive the unemployment rate to 10.8% - higher than even in the recent "Great Recession.")
In foreign affairs, things were little better. Mr. Carter spoke of America's "inordinate fear of communism." Then only to have the USSR invade Afghanistan. This, by the way, in the wake of Mr. Carter negotiating a nuclear arms limitation treaty that was so bad that he could not get a Democrat controlled Senate to ratify it. The only arms control treaty to that time to suffer such a fate.
Then of course, worse still, was the Iran hostage crisis. This underlined by a failed rescue attempt that cost a number of American soldiers their lives.
There were some successes, to be sure. Notably the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. However, even here, the opportunity that such a treaty ought to have afforded US foreign policy was never fully exploited. Mr. Carter seeming to be content with having done a good deed rather than use the treaty to further advance US national security interests.
Suffice to add, Mr. Carter's job approval rating sunk to an abysmal 38% - and in due course he was defeated in a landslide election by Ronald Reagan. A President so successful that at his height, Mr. Reagan's job approval rating hit an eye bulging 72%.
Bottom line, judged as a man, Mr. Carter was decent, moral and kind - and deserves to be so remembered and duly credited. Yet those good qualities should not wipe from he historical memory his rancid tenure as President.
Mr. Carter wasn't a lousy President, but he chose to govern domestically from the right (or at least in American terms, centre-right), alienating progressives. He brokered the Israel-Egypt Camp David accord to stabilize the Middle East, and domestically was responsible for the Departments of Education and Energy, both of which his successor, Mr. Ray-Guns, attempted to dismantle and did weaken.
Mr. Carter was undone by his infamous "Malaise" speech in which, though never uttering the word, said his compatriots' mood was very low due to inflation and other things. And the 444-day Iran hostage crisis, which ended the day Mr. Ray-Guns supplanted Mr. Carter as U. S. President, sank Mr. Carter, whose dedication to improving the world was his most admirable trait. RIP, Mr. Carter, I'm afraid your like will NEVER again be seen at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. !!!
@beefcakebradybatson Well, as noted from the stats I cited above, Mr. Carter's presidency was not a sterling success. If you attribute this to HIS decision to govern from the center-right - an odd characterization but we won't debate it here - the fact is that the decision and the responsibility for that decision remained his.
To say that he was not a bad President but chose to govern poorly is, to say no more, an odd defense. In any case, the man who succeeded him took office with an inflation rate at 13.1% and by 1986 brought it down to 1.1%. Unemployment under Reagan reached 5% - which at that time economists believed was statistical unemployment.
As for as foreign policy, Reagan negotiated - and got through the Senate - the first nuclear arms REDUCTION - not just limit, but actual reduction - treaty in history. Also, of course, he presided over the West's victory in the Cold War.
Sorry, but by any measure. Mr. Carter has nothing comparable in his record. Plus, as already noted, if you choose to characterize his governance as "center-right" (an odd characterization, but no matter), that responsibility remains Mr. Carter. His choice, his responsibility and if a bad choice, the fault must lay with him. This hardly qualifying him as a good President.
He gets kind of a tough rap, and I wish I had been alive/more conscious for his term to get a good assessment of it. Now more than ever, I wonder if people from the past were as bad or performed as poorly as we get told, or if it’s politically-charged narrative. I think Joe Biden has done a pretty decent job, all considered, but the narrative from some would lead you to believe he’s the worst of all time, lmao, which I think should be obviously ridiculous to an unbiased observer. Who knows how history will write about him now? Depends on who’s writing, I guess.
So these past four years have really taught me to take public opinion with a full shaker of salt, because it turns out that the public, by and large, are incredibly dumb, poor at making legitimate performance assessments, and generally are too uninformed/misinformed to be listened to about just about anything political. The transcript of “public opinion” wouldn’t be worth the paper it was printed on.
Carter seems like he was a very good man, at very minimum. His hits and misses are up for debate, but above all else, I want our country to be led by someone of pure character.
I wasn’t born when he was president but I he are rumours he was known as a very good person and a terrible national decision maker. That he wanted to make an America better but he did not have the skill or experience to make it better. I believe he is probably in Heaven be cause he tried so hard to do charity work when he could have spent his entire retirement lounging on a beach and eating steak.
Although he was way before my time, dad said that he was the most moral and upstanding president this country has ever had, bar none. After reading about his accomplishments post presidency, I'll have to agree with him. Can you imagine the president-elect ever spending any time at all building houses for poor people? Or teaching Sunday school?
And yet, he was an awful, useless president and extremely poor leader. Which is why he got absolutely slaughtered in the 1980 election. He literally made everything he touched worse instead of better, because he refused to accept the way the world actually was, and tried to treat it as he felt it should be, which meant that nothing he did was grounded in reality. And eventually he just gave up.

Back-to-back Ford and Carter were just what the country needed. Neither one did much. But that means they didn't do much that was controversial. That's exactly what this country needed after the turmoil of the 60s and early 70s. It gave people a chance to take a deep breath, calm down, and move on with their lives. I didn't vote for either one, I voted third party.
But in hindsight I think they were good for the country. We could use a couple of similar high integrity, non-controversial presidents today.
Of course Carter is best known for the Camp David Accords. Parts of that were slightly controversial, but it was very tame compared to what had been going on in recent times. It still amazes me that the peace between Israel and Egypt has held all these years. It even lasted after Sadat's assassination by radicals who opposed the deal.
I was just thinking recently about how old Carter was getting. He outlived two presidents who came after. Now Clinton and Bush2 are the oldest ex-presidents. If I remember right, those two are very close to the same age.
You've got a high integrity, non-controversial president, it's just people are lying about him 24/7.
The most controversial thing Biden's actually done (as opposed to haveing been accused of doing) is his support for Israel, and it's unlikely any president would have done differently.
@goaded I'm not right or left I'm closer to center and I don't belong to any party other than the "me" party because I think parties cause groupthink echo chambers and I think that kills democracies slowly like poison. As an American I hate Trump more, but I hate Biden too because he's been sitting on his ass with his thumb up his bumb for the entire Ukraine war and wet his pants every single time Putin threw a tantrum.
Factually also he's too old to be president just like trump. I'm so sick of a string of senior citizens with dementia running the country and all we've done is replace one with another. I don't understand how people still believe the illusion that if we can just find the "right politician" everything will be perfect our society will be fixed and all will be well with the world.
In reality it doesn't matter. There is no republican, democrat or libertarian parties, they're smoke screens for the only real party in America. The 1% party. At this point I care more about Ukraine then my own country I feel like they remember how important freedom is and we've forgotten and become complacent when things don't have to be this way.
@KingslayerC I'm sure there is some of that but there are hundreds of reasons why we HAVE TO back Isreal. It doesn't matter if you are left, right, or center America and all of NATO need Isreal to function properly. If we lose them one of our biggest providers of arms and our only close friend in the middle east disappears and the terrorists get complete and free rein. We need them for the economy, we need it for political reasons, and we need them for national security. I'm not saying Isreal hasn't done bad things or even crossed lines. In fact one of the worst lines they've crossed that really pisses me off is they have an incredibly high friendly fire rate on their own troops. Like disturbingly high.
That said, a lot of people don't understand the depth of the situation and how complicated this war is just from a combat perspective let alone a political or religious one. HAMAS, Hezbollah, and terrorist groups in general go out of their way to make sure civilians get hurt.
They use refugee camps as hide outs. They use hospitals and apartment blocks as positions to shoot from. This is a war where the combatants are so brainwashed that they woman walking up to the refugee aid truck with a swaddling cloth might have a baby or she might have a bomb. Even if Isreal did every single thing in their power to minimize collateral damage the collateral there would still be a ton of it.
@KingslayerC People were saying Isreal was targeting civilians with artillery on purpose in the news and stuff and there may have been some of that in small scale on the field but people don't understand bullet drift and how packed the west bank is. If there was a strong gust of wind after they fired that shell, it's entirely possible for it to miss its actual target and completely hit something else. When snipers take shots, they have to account for the wind and earth's rotation the same is true for any ballistic projectile.
This is a messy and complicated war but I don't understand how my country has gone so far in the wrong direction we have people saying HAMAS and Hezbollah are hero's. They are terrorists and I've seen what these radical factions will do.
I'm 29 I remember 9/11 my mother's husband was a first responder and he has permanent lung damage and a massive risk of cancer. Most first responders are already dead. I've seen the footage of people jumping out windows because they didn't want to burn alive in the two towers and I've seen a real video of ISIS fighters sawing off two mens heads alive with combat knives for being gay with my own eyes. These terrorist groups have to be controlled because they put the whole world at risk. Some things you can't unsee.

We we're arguing over whether or not Islam as an Ideology was evil and at the time I was pro Islam. He sat me down and made me watch that video because I didn't have a car, and I lived on the other side of town and he wouldn't take me home till I watched it.
I'm older and more jaded now as well as at this point focusing more on being pragmatic than idealistic since It gets more realistic results. I no longer believe Islam can exist is a civilized world. Ford pardoned criminal Nixon, beginning the trend of Presidents getting away with felonies. Carter was a decent gentleman who made mistakes such as not doing enough to aid the economy and appearing weak on terrorism ala the Hostage crisis, but the Camp David accord was his top international work and the Depts. of Education and Energy were his greatest domestic achievements.

Pardoning Nixon was very controversial at the time. But in hindsight most historians and political scientists agree that it was a good thing. That's for the very reason I mentioned in my original reply. It was time to leave the past in the past. If he hadn't done that, the turmoil would have continued for many more years. What the country needed more than anything at the time was to calm down and take a deep breath.
It meant that rich white boys were hooking up other rich white boys, and Nixon's going to prison for his crimes would have proved that no American is above the law, and likely would have prevented the farce of the U. S.' having a multi-convicted President.

Someone else called him not a good president, but perhaps the best Ex-President, in terms of charitable work.
And he lived long enough to see a President Biden, who was even worse than Carter in terms of what Carter was faulted for, namely economic stagflation and an ineffectual foreign policy.
And even Carter's foreign policy wasn't completely disastrous. He did broker a peace deal between Egypt and Israel that has lasted 46 years and counting so far.

The economy was terrible because of his policies, he created an energy crisis which Democrats love to do, he completely botched the rescue of American hostages held by Iran which humiliated the United States and that marked a turning point in America's strength.
I'm not surprised that he passed away now. The timing is meaningful. He probably figured now that Biden's term is over he can rest in peace knowing that America finally had a president that was even worse than he was.
Did I mention The Mariel Boatlift where Carter encouraged Castro in communist Cuba to flush its criminal toilets and send their felons to America because Carter and the Democrats felt so sorry for these poor discriminated against people.

Iran took 53 American hostages under the Carter presidency and held them for 444 days.
After a severely botched rescue attempt in which America was humiliated under Carter, it wasn't until the very day AND THE VERY HOUR that President Reagan was sworn in on January 20th, 1981 (the hour of this speech) that Iran suddenly released the hostages.
They knew that America was now getting a real president. Sound familiar? Everything old is new again.

@AviatorTom I think he was a good, honest moral man, but he was not an effective President, and there will always be the Iranian hostage crisis that will haunt his legacy, as his indecision cost lives when he finally decided to act after more than 400 days of delay.
To live 100 years is a milestone to be sure.

In fact he managed to get military pay boosted a good amount after other presidents had let it stagnate. He put in very much time and effort helping humanity (Habitat For Humanity). Overall, a great human!
I know literally nothing about him. I don't even know what political party he was. The only impression I have of him is an episode of Simpsons when I was a kid where he was building homes for poor people, so it made me think the real version of him was a nice guy.

I don't know much about him but I heard people saying that he betrayed the shah of Iran and thus played a major rule in the rise of the mullah regime.
The middle east and especially Iraq, Lebanon and Iran itself are still suffering from this regime since 40 years.

I think he was a really good man I think he was better than a lot of presidents because he kept his mouth shut and he did business behind doors he did a lot of positive things for the world he's done things that we probably don't know about . I think he was a "for real" guy, and had qualities about him that are lacking in so many politicians today.
I lived through his presidency. While he did accomplish a few major peace accords and such, he, overall, really didn't do much for the US during his tenure. His greatest achievements were done after he left office.

dude these are common behavior during war times, unfortunately women and children are always the victims of war. is too bad I can't upload a video here I once saved with Ukrainian soldiers beating up and raping a russian woman; and source claimed it wasn't the only time. which of course they are not gonna show you what Ukraine's side of the story cause again the MSM wants you to believe Ukrainians are the so called victims here while they enrich themselves with the money we are sending them that they will most likely use in the future to build mass weapons and bring back the ussr.
Uh heads up like 10% of the aid we send to Ukraine is in money form. When these aid packages are announced and they say "2 billion dollars" we're not giving Ukraine 2 billion dollars.
America spends 90% of that money here in America buying ammo, weapons and vehicles for us and then send our old equipment getting close to being unsafe for use to Ukraine to shoot at the Russians equal to the value we spent re arming ourselves. Out of the 10% sent in money form there is 0 evidence of theft or abuse of the funds.
Not only does blocking this stop us from keeping our weapons and ammo up to date but disposing of the shells and weapons properly that we're giving Ukraine would cost more money than giving them away for free, so Ukraine is actually saving our country money while shooting our enemies and letting us re arm our own military.
As for those things being "Normal in war." There's a difference between a feature and a F up and war crimes, genocide and the murder of civilians is by Russia's deliberate design. It's encouraged from the top down.
Every single town that Ukraine has liberated has had torture dungeons and mass graves with sexual assault and torture victims. The Russians shelled every town they've tried to take into rubble, and they're drone bombing schools, churches and hospitals over and over as well as civilian housing and grocery stores every chance, they get.
They have used multiple weapons of war banned by the Geneva convention repeatedly and still are and they do double tap strikes constantly which is also a war crime. Putin is even committing war crimes against his own people. They're shooting their own wounded because they're out of medical supplies and the wounded that can still walk are sent in suicide charges to expose the Ukrainian positions.
They aren't being paid, they aren't being fed, they aren't being watered and are often given less than two weeks of training and a single magazine and told to charge for the motherland. Russian infrastructure is collapsing and several dams have burst.
As of today Russia has taken 787,940 soldiers wounded or killed, 20,003 APVs, 9663 tanks, 21069 pieces of artillery, 369 planes, 324 helicopters, and 1032 anti-aircraft plus much, much more of many other things. Google the Russian Ruble it's worth a fraction of an American cent right now. And all of this what was it for? To take 20% of Ukrainian ground when the goal was to overthrow the whole government after several years of war.
And as for Ukraine rebuilding the USSR wtf are you even talking about? The Ukrainians left the USSR as fast as they could and the entire reason, they're fighting this war is they want to stay an independent democracy and not be pulled back into the Russian sphere. Ukraine doesn't even have a government recognized communist party but guess what Russia does. Also Putin in his own words has said. “The dissolution of the USSR was the greatest tragedy in Russian history.”

And while war crimes are horrific, let’s not ignore that propaganda flows both ways in conflicts. If we’re going to nitpick atrocities, maybe he should also ask how depleted uranium rounds and cluster bombs (used by the U. S.) fit into the Geneva Convention playbook.

They are fully legal to use on enemy combatants in the intended way America uses cluster munitions and depleted uranium rounds too as long as you use them in the proper context it's not a war crime.
