Should Guy Fawkes Night come to an end?

Guy Fawkes night is celebrated in the UK to mark a failed bomb plot in 1604. Here in Wales it's celebrated with toffee apples and roasting chestnuts on a bonfire while singing hymns. In Scotland and England it's about burning sofas in the street, flytipping, firebombing buses, shoving bangers up cats backsides and having a riot.

The celebration was largely brought in to whip up anti Catholic rhetoric and keep the hatred going. However the UK went through 30 years of bombings by the IRA leading many to question if celebrating one failed event hundreds of years ago was still appropriate.

Personally I think let it go. It's bang next to Halloween and many places are already merging the two combining fireworks and bonfires with ghosts and goblins.
