A U. S. cruise ship on a residential world voyage suspended its operations in Cambodia due to fuel costs, forcing hundreds of passengers to abandon their floating homes.
The Odyssey set sail two years ago on a three-year voyage to the seven continents marketed as combining long-term living at sea with global travel.
The Florida-based company said monthly fuel expenses per cabin that historically averaged $1,800 has recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia during the war in Iran. Villa Vie Residences said it sought to reduce fuel consumption by slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, but was unable to offset the surge in fuel costs.
"We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses," it said. "Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees" while it tries to restructure.
The ship carried 203 passengers with 15 nationalities, mostly Americans, and 156 crew members. It had a capacity of 650 residents.
Passengers have been told to leave the ship, but the crew's status was unclear.
The Odyssey had a confirmed itinerary into November 2027. The company planned for a second residential cruise ship to enter service in early 2029, but the statement on the suspension of the Odyssey's voyage did not address the second ship.

They should have completed the journey but at least they're supporting the staff unlike P&O a couple of years ago who sacked everyone and replaced with migrant workers for less than minimum wage.
Not completing the journey is going to be a PR nightmare and opens them up to be sued. Could run more expensive than finishing the job.
Since ships tend to break down frequently, I'm betting that they had a covenant in their their initial agreement with prospective passengers that absolves them of responsibility for the ship, breaking down or unexpected things happening, or the like. Probably excessive fuel costs. Was possibly one of them. Any event. I don't think they would have done this if they weren't legally covered for it. Hopefully they were just insured and the insurance company is going to the interruption costs.
Yeah offsetting the fuel costs by staying in port is a tough one also, because it costs a lot to stay in port. They have to pay by the day to dock in a port. It also takes fuel just to sit there because they have to operate the electrical generators to keep the power going. Although it certainly wouldn't be that much energy compared to moving the ship. Yeah this is a tough one. I'm glad I'm not in the position to suddenly have to find a place to stay. LOL
Americans not following through on a deal, big surprise there. They'll surely have to refund them and pay for their accomidations and flights home. It will probably end up costing more than the fuel. Idiots! They should have followed through and completed the itinirary.
I smell a rat! I bet it's a Democrat shiv meant for Trump and the Republicans.
I think they should have anticipated this, but since they were unable to it's going to make a real mess. Thanks again, Trump.
I’ve never heard of that before, but it doesn’t surprise me
tell these countries that banned drilling for oil to allow it to flood the market and crash the price.
Boo Hoo a bunch of entitled nitwits get inconvenienced because Americans do not want to be nuked.
