It's not just the U. S. having massive amounts of flights canceled. The lies/excuses are the same everywhere (weather, maintenance). As far as the cost of jet fuel, the baggage fees were created when fuel prices sky rocketed during Biden's last term as VP. The fees were meant to offset the added costs and be an incentive to reduce the weight of loaded aircraft.

Personally, I think flights are being canceled everywhere due c to a shortage in crew. Every airline has a mandatory vaccine policy for new hires. That certainly limits their application pool.

The main problem airlines face is lack of qualified flight crews and airport staff. When the pandemic hit, many pilots, crew and airport staff were furloughed, laid off, fired, or quit. Many took other jobs, and many older pilots just retired, and no new pilots entered the system. Now that normal air travel is returning, there aren't enough personnel to handle the same number of aircraft as pre-pandemic. This results in cancellations and disruptions.
