College Sorority Life. Everyone has their own opinion of the sorority girls on campus. They are the "sluts", "bitches", "party girls" or "slackers". There are ideas and stereotypes whispered around every college campus that offers a Greek Community. If you aren't Greek, you probably hate the sorority girls and fraternity guys. I know, I've heard it many times. "You shouldn't need to pay for your friends" or have an "easy-in" to hook up with a hot frat guy.

But I'm a sorority girl, and I don't fit any of those stereotypes. I'm just a normal college student that wanted to get involved on campus and make lifelong friends, just like the rest of my sisters.

Walking into a sorority house as an outsider can be intimidating. Girls are all over the place. They know each other inside and out. If you are a guy, you can only be in the common area - no boys allowed in the bedrooms! And if it's past midnight, don't even try and walk in the front door because you aren't allowed in at all. No alcohol can be in the house no matter what. Inside, some girls might be running around like fools with no shirt on, while some might be yelling to shut the hell up if they are trying to study. It's like one huge family. It's not all just partying - it's a bond you can't break.

Of course, I do my fair share of partying with my sisters, that's only natural! I have had more fun times with those girls than I ever have in my life. Partying is essential in the life of me and my pledge sisters. I've also met fraternity guys that have become my best friends, and a few lucky ones have gotten to date me. ;)

The media paints the wrong picture about sororities. Movies, TV shows, and magazines don't do Greek Life any justice. If someone took the time to research a sorority and what it stands for, they'd soon realize it's more than handbags, high heels and hard alcohol. To think that a college sorority only values shopping sprees and frat parties is the same shallow thinking that declares all good-looking blondes are dumb.

Every sorority is involved in philanthropy. My sorority works with St. Joe's Institute for the Deaf. The other sororities on my campus help raise awareness for Breast Cancer or work with disadvantaged children. We all host fundraising events regularly and volunteer whenever homework allows.

So, you can see it's not all fun and games for college sorority sisters. We may make it look easier because we have one another to lean on. We have connections, a supportive community. Get to know us, and Greek Life, and you'll like it as much as I do!

motorboater The two misconceptions about sororities you bring to the table are 1) it's not all partying, its more like a family and 2) you're involved in philanthropy. I already knew that, yet don't like sororities. Seven paraphraphs to make two points, and the rest of your essay is a whine about how you are misunderstood. Please study debate and composition more and party less to rewrite this with MANY more specifics about what value sororities have that we just don't understand. The rest is just trite. - More than a year ago
Stanley Sororities are relics of a social order that valued social placement over intellectual achievement. As universities exist, in theory, to pursue and reward intellectual challenges, the Greek system is an awkward older brother. They'll never get respect from the core of the university because their highest values - being cool and popular - do not gel with the university's purpose - mental achievement. Different scales - the stronger the school, the weaker the Greek system...and vice versa. - More than a year ago
melissarose8585 I understand they aren't all bad girls, and I've had many friends who were in sororities. But after a few months as one, I hated it. And it could be attributed to my campus-our greeks are the stereotypical party, party, party types, with little philanthropy or studying. It was all backstabbing, who you were dating, which party you were going to, and how you looked. I'm glad you got a good group, but they aren't all that way. - 8 months ago
