Lets say they are looking at you while they open the door for you and they just keep looking at you and they just have this blank expression on their face that you can't really read and your looking at them back but your face is saying, "Ok what are you looking at?" but in a jokingly way?
Yea he could be cautious about the door closing on you. If its about attraction or shyness it could be that he's taken poor advice from random blog entries about the power of the stare. A fool might be staring you with a creepy look for hours and wonder what he did wrong.
The blank stare could possibly mean nothing. He was polite enough to hold the door, way to rep for the decent guys bro, and he didn't give you a bad line that made you want to wash the sleeze off.
Your giving a weird look back might also be telling him something that he'll fry his mind trying to figure out. He might have a question up on here "What if you hold the door for a girl...".
The way you described what you meant with the face you made, seems like it might look snobbish. It might put off any interests he might have had. Or shun a shy guy.

If it's while they're opening the door for you, it could just mean they want to make sure you're through the door before they close it on you or go through after you.
The real stare test is if you're both in the same room and you see them staring at you. Then it's a question of attraction.
But if it's opening a door? It probably means nothing.
