Guys - asking him out on Facebook: how should I phrase it?

Question

Met a guy at uni, we hit off pretty well but I couldn't tell if he was flirting or what he thought of me...I couldn't find the courage to ask for his number and he didn't ask for mine - uni is over now so unless I add him on Facebook and ask him out that way, I won't see him ever again. So how should I phrase it when asking him out? Start a casual private message conversation first or get straight to the point?

I thought I might do it like this:

-Start a casual conversation via Facebook private message and talk about general things like how exams went and plans for summer (its nearly summer in my part of the world)

-Finish the conversation with something like "anyway, reckon you'd like to catch up some time? if so...message me - (insert phone number here)...if not, have an awesome summer :)"

Is that too forward or too casual? I want him to know I'm interested but at the same time I don't want to be too forward.

Do you have his phone number?

If so, then why the hell are you gonna ask him out over an instant messenger or blog.

You're giving him too much time to use his brain rather than his feelings.

I guess I must be getting old, but this whole cyber courage stuff does not fly with me.

Give him a call, or bump into him in person and ask him if he wants to chill.

You'll get a way better understanding of the vibes between yourselves in person (Even over the phone) vs typing and reading text on a screen.

I think your plan sounds pretty good. You talked to the guy before, so the first two questions are good and casual. You're just talking about school and throwing in the typical vacation plans question.

The ending I don't like. You sound desperate to be honest. Giving out your number then saying "If you're not interested then have a good summer."

Just work off by what he message you back with. Then work your way into other topics. Then casually dropping your number on the way.

text or Facebook.  I feel as though the solution is simple( if when you met him and had more than a one line conversation)- Simply say you are hanging out at such and such location.  Come out and play!  It wouldn't be on heard of, especially is you are still in the same city.
