What happens after triple bypass surgery?

Anonymous
My father-in-law is 70 and has been in poor shape his whole life. He's been a drinker, an eater, and loves his fishing and good times. It caught up with him this year and it was determined his liver is pretty much shot, but as for his heart, he needed triple bypass surgery.

The doctors have told him he needs to change his life, and definitely not to drink again or go out on the water for at least six months, maybe a year after his surgery.

He had his surgery, but after three weeks, went back out on his boat. Apparently the motion of the boat is something that is a concern, but he says he only will go out when the water is calm. My mother-in-law smokes and drinks and hasn't changed her cooking style. It's as if they both think now that he's out of surgery he's cured, but I know this is wrong.

Apparently they have not been drinking, but I know my MiL smokes and still makes her usual food (buttered everything and white bread, cookies, pancakes, syrup, you name it), and with his habit of going out fishing again, it pisses me off that he's taking this whole thing as being trivial.

When I tried researching online about what "could" happen I can't find information. I only find information on how it's important to follow doctors orders, with no real doomsday predictions.

So what could happen here? Could he have a heart attack sooner than later? I don't want to upset them or my husband with my nagging so I've kept it simple, I just tell them that life has changed and it's crucial that he does what the doctor says.

But I'm just the daughter-in-law and they won't listen to me. So what can we expect realistically if he keeps it up? Only a matter of time before he tries a drink and if he wakes up alive he'll just think the doctors were wrong and keep doing it. But the fishing and diet? Is this serious or am I overreacting?

If anyone has experience with this, or has had a loved one go through any bypass surgery, please let me know. Thanks!
