Money.
A 2 or 3 dollar difference on all your meat, veggies, fruit, whatever adds up quite quickly. People live the money they have. A family of 4 or 5 (example) might be living pay to pay. Not everyone has $75,000.00 a year job.
There are other expenses in life as well. Mortgage/rent, bills, maybe a car, gas, clothes, school supplies, college The list goes on and on.
Maybe once you get out in the real world, you'll be better able to appreciate what you do to survive.

I've never seen free range cheese. how do you know the cows, goats, whatever other animal milk is taken from are being treated "humanely?
