Well, for me it's a long and mildly embarrassing story...
It all started a couple of years ago. I was at work one day and needed to use the toilet, I retracted my foreskin, as I always do automatically without thinking about it, and for some reason I looked down at it and I noticed a greyish-white lesion on the head of my penis.
My first reaction was to try and see if it washed off - it didn't! But I resolved to not panic about it and keep an eye on it for a week or so to see if it disappeared of it's own accord - it didn't! So I did the mature thing and went to see my doctor.
Once I was stood there with my penis out and my foreskin retracted for him to examine me he told me he wasn't sure what it was and referred me to a urologist. The first thing the urologist asked me when I sat down was "Are you diabetic?" The urologist asked me that because there was a high level of sugar in the urine sample I had to provide.
Anyway, once again I had to pull down my trousers and pants to allow the urologist to examine my penis. She (yes, it was a woman - how embarrassing!) prodded and poked and swabbed my poor penis for several minutes and came to a conclusion. "It looks like a case of Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO) and, judging by the high level of sugar in your urine sample I would suggest it is caused by diabetes". It turns out that diabetes is a major cause of balanitis in men.
To cut a long story short (cos GAG only lets us have 2000 characters!) I had several blood tests which indeed did confirm that I have Type 2 Diabetes. The BXO cleared up pretty quickly and now 2 years on I have lost 4 stone, got my blood sugar under control, cut out loads of sugar from my diet and I now feel loads better for it!
The way I found out may be unusual and embarrassing but I am so glad I went to the doctor rather than be embarrassed and try to brush it under the carpet - I'm just glad I found out before it got too serious.
