Sure you'll lose some weight, but if you want to make rapid progress, and KEEP it off, you'll need, even more than the gym, a scientific and appealing diet program, one that you can stick with for the long term.
MANY PEOPLE CAN'T MANAGE THE INCREASE IN APPETITE THAT COMES WITH THE WORKOUTS.
Also, your workout is a little boring.. Try a variety of activities. Aerobics classes are great introductions to working out that are much more excitihg than staring at the wall from the bike or the treadmill!.
It's easier with a professionally devised program like Weight Watchers. They'll tell you exactly what to eat, and you won't have to worry about eating too much. They'll also give you moral support, built-in 'break' days, and good tasting desserts occasionally that won't cancel all your good behavior!
Most people can't manage that much weight loss on their own.
It will take 6-9 months to lose that much weight, even with good behavior. So if you aren't perfectly self-disciplined, it could take years on your own.

It depends what you eat.
I'll hazard a guess if you did not change your eating habits at all, and if your weight is currently absolutely stable, you'll burn 500-600 calories/hour doing this. 3 times a week means you'd lose 1-2 lb a month if you added this exercise, were previously stable, and change nothing else.
If you eat a couple extra treats or a bigger plate of pasta because you're hungry, you won't lose weight at all.
You will however be in better shape, which is worth something, though I suspect its not your main goal.
With a disciplined diet, adding a lot of aerobic work can help burn calories, but this really works best for people who are already fit.
Studies have shown that dieters doing aerobic work barely lose more then dieters doing no exercise. By contrast, dieters doing resistance work lose significantly more and preserve lean body mass more effectively.
So I'd actually suggest you lift weights for 40 minutes at the gym, 3 x a week, and set a good diet, if body recomposition is your goal.
I would say diet/food is 80% and exercise is 20% in weightloss. If you exercise for an hour one day and eat 2 cookies extra, you are not going to lose any weight. It is much easier to eat calories than to burn them. Just keep that in mind.

There is 3 principles you must understand when it comes to losing weight.
1. Proper exercise
2. Nutrition
3. Sleep and rest
1. You have to do strength traning, you can't just keep on doing cardio forever, strength training is the hammer and anvil that will shape your body.
2. Nutrition. What you eat, will manifest itself physically outside of your body. If you eat healthy foods, you will look healthy. If you eat unhealthy, you will look unhealthy.
3. This is probably the most important one out of the 3. Give your body a chance to repair, grow and adapt. All the changes in your body, happens through your sleep. Here are some tips:
Reduce the amount of calories you take
Drink LOTS of water(more than 8 glasses per day)-this will trick your brain to think that your stomach is full so you won't have to eat more than intended
Eat slowly so a meal will be enough
Do not drink any fast foods, foods rich in fats/sugar
Be consinstent & serious about it and you will eventually notice results.Don't get frustrated easily.40lbs is quite a bit of weight to lose like being "a little" overweight and losing 40lbs would make you extremely petite and would be very hard depending on how much fat you have. A diet is severly neeeded. From girls I know the best cardio is in the morning before you eat as it only burns pure fat going at a HIT high intensity training level
It's not the time of the workout, but the intensity (and also your lifestyle).
If you are sedentary the entire day and then you do an hour of moderate exercise, you won't lose much weight.
If you are moderately active the entire day (you walk, move around, etc.) and you do 15-20 of really intense exercise, you will lose a lot of weight.Losing weight means you'll have to go on a calorie deficit. So that means eating less and training hard, and you'll start to see your weight drop. If you don't see a change in your weight after a few weeks then you should really eat less(cleaner) and maybe train a lot harder.
hope all goes well with your journey and good luck! :)Running on a treadmill is like lifting your feet for muscles in the legs, so I prefer running on a track or outside. Walking actually burns more sugar / fat than running does too.
Watch your diet as well, to get healthier.
Biking/Spinning will be good as long as you sweat nicely, good luck!Depending of the resistance on the "Bike thing" you may actually put muscle on making you bigger. I doubt you're massive anyway. Using the cross trainer is what I'd recommend instead of using the bikes as you're using more of your body.
