Guys who go to the gym: Do you assign a particular day of the week for each muscle group?

I just signed up for the gym at my university and I'm looking to get toned, but I don't want to get too big or put on too much muscle because I'm short and it would look funny.

What's the best way to tone up? Should I assign a particular day to work on a particular muscle group? Or would it be better if I work on every muscle group in moderation every time I go?
