Probably, but I wouldn't waste time & energy arguing about it. I would just try to resolve whatever the problem was so you can move on in your friendship if that's what the goal is. It's also better to do that in person, 'cause some people don't communicate well over texts & email since you can't convey tone of voice, etc. Better to eliminate any chance for miscommunication where possible.

You can't possibly know, so you're best off just accepting his excuse and moving on.
That being said, it really is a probable excuse - both my roommates and one of their friends lost their phones over the weekend. I leave the house for a few days and all the boys are lost.. Sigh. I think some men are just terrible with their belongings.
That's an excuse, but in all honesty, I lose my phone about five times a day.
Do it back to him. Wait three days and if he responds and wondera what happens say, "oops lost my phone!"
Make him feel annoying like he makes you feel annoying.
Can't prove it, just need to psychologically play his game.

Something he didn't want to hear? Yeah, I'd say he was lying, haha!
It's a lame excuse, honestly. Because he had to know you wouldn't believe him.If this happens more than once, then yes he's either lying or is really irresponsible, but most likely lying.
About 98% probability! Yes...
