16 Songs To Help You Deal With Heartbreak

goldielocks2

Almost everyone I know has been through heartbreak in some way. Whether it's a significant other, a friend, a sibling or a parent who broke your heart, it's all equally painful and the sense of loss can sometimes be unbearable. Most people try to numb the pain by getting into a new hobby or by bettering themselves.

Many people turn to music, because the lyrics in a song can sometimes ring so true you burst into tears as you're listening to it right there and then. A song will sometimes understand what you're going through better than your best friend. You suddenly understand that you're not the first and you're certainly not the last person to be broken and shattered and that other people have gone through the same thing you have, perhaps they even had it worse. Music can also take you back in time to when things were just getting started in your relationship and show you that they weren't always so complicated and painful.

Here are 15 songs to help soothe a broken heart.

1. Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here

Who doesn't love this one? For those times you sit there wondering how they're doing and what they've been up to without you. And keep wishing they were there with you..

2. She and Him- Sentimental Heart

When you love someone, you take everything they do to heart. It becomes so easy to get hurt. ''Old habits die hard.. What can you do with a sentimental heart?''

3. Katie Melua- Closest Thing To Crazy

This song describes the first stages of loving someone perfectly, when you're so infatuated that you act out of character. The kind of love that makes you question yourself. It's the best kind.

4.The Velvet Underground- Pale Blue Eyes

This is the most beautiful and most melancholic song written if there ever was one. Lou Reed apparently wrote this about his first love whom he could never have, since she was married. You can really feel the emotions he was going through at the time. First love really is the most intense, and certainly makes for the most heart wrenching music. You kind of stop taking everything to heart as much later on, so you get hurt less easily in the relationships that follow the first one.

5. Kath Bloom- Come Here

Another song that deals with missing someone. This scene is from the movie Before Sunrise. It's so beautiful, so I thought I'd insert it into this take. ''No I'm not impossible to touch, I have never wanted you so much''- SO TRAGIC! Warning: Best listened to when missing them becomes unbearable, that's the time you'll fully appreciate this song.

6. The Moody Blues- Nights in White Satin

Very haunting song that describes the confusion of being in love and how you feel that everything is changing as the feeling of being in love with someone swallows you up. When you think that no one has ever felt the way that you do and that no one can possibly understand. This song understands...

7. Bob Dylan- Don't Think Twice It's Alright

When someone has had more of an effect on your life than they could ever imagine. When you've had all these fantasies and expectations because you thought they felt the same kind of enthusiasm towards you as you did towards them and you're just sort of disappointed in how the whole situation turned out but at the end of the day you realise that no one is to blame. This song is about the thought process you go through when you choose to move on from them.

8. Oasis- Stop Crying Your Heart Out

For when it's time to stop feeling sorry for yourself, learn from your mistakes, let go of the pain and take your experience onto the next venture in life.

9. Amanda Seyfried- Little Houses

'I love this place, but it's haunted without you' - Such a beautiful lyric sang with Amanda's sweet voice. She sounds like an angel. When someone moves away and you have to stay where you two made memories and you feel like the whole place is a ghost town without them.

10. Dusty Springfield- Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart

For when you feel like you've done everything you possibly could have to make a relationship work but the other person just takes everything you give them without returning the effort. Once you stop putting in effort, everything falls apart. Truly. This is a song about the frustrations of a one sided relationship.

11. 10CC-Not in Love

You know when you're healing from a heartbreak and you feel like you can never love anyone ever again? Then someone comes along, someone amazing whom you kind of start seeing but you're just not in love with them. You don't mean to use them, but you still do. These are the words you wish you could say to them, but you probably never do because you don't want to hurt their fragile hearts. Or maybe it's just because you actually are in love, you just don't want to admit it even to yourself after all the pain you've already been through in another relationship.

12. The Cure- Pictures of You

Reminiscing about how things were with someone you thought was in love with you only to realise that it probably never meant as much to them as it did to you. It was a toss up between this and Just Like Heaven, which is an equally amazing piece of art!

13. All Too Well-Taylor Swift

Ok, I'm sorry, I had to put a TS song in here. Her breakup music soothes the soul. This particular song is very personal, if you just listen to the lyrics, you can tell how many emotions she went through while writing it. She's basically sharing her memories. 'Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralysed by it, I 'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it.' Most relatable line.. When you adore someone so much you just lose yourself in the process of loving them..

And when it's over you're left picking up the pieces and have to go through the agonising process of finding your way back to your old self. Do you even really want to be your old self? Not really... Do you want to forget all the good because of the bad? No... No one can ever hurt you as much as those whom you love. Be careful who you invest your time and feelings in kids, it's all fun and games until you can relate to Taylor Swift lyrics.

14. Chris Isaack- Wicked Game

This song probably became your anthem if you've ever had to deal with unrequited love.

15. Joni Mitchell - A Case of You

For when you cannot get enough of someone! When you feel like you could 'drink a case of them and still want more.

16. Gloria Gaynor- I Will Survive

The ultimate break up anthem. You will survive, you've got all your love to give, all your life to live. It's gonna be all right in the end and if it's not all right it's not the end. Now I'm just quoting random people from instagram. This song is rad.
