My ex wished me happy birthday... on the wrong day. How do you deal with persistent ex?

My ex texts me out the blue saying he hoped I am having a good birthday today. My birthday is in two days. Is it because he misses me? Does he regret cheating? Why communicate with me at all, when we have not seen each other in almost a year? I do not want him back. Should I just ignore or respond "Thank you, please leave me alone or go crawl back into whatever dark hole you climbed out of?"

Maybe he misses you, maybe he can't deal with the fact that it's your birthday and you're not together, maybe he's just messing around with you, I'm not telling you to get back to him, just don't be cruel about it, we make mistakes.

If you dont want him back then it doesn't matter why he reched out to you.
