Why are breakups so hard?

Even when you know it’s for the best and you know that no matter how hard you tried, you two are just incompatible. I hate that I had to hurt him to do what’s best for me. He told me “You got what you wanted. We’re not together” except that’s not that I wanted. Hearing that hurt. And I heard the hurt in his voice as well. I wanted to be with him but I knew it wasn’t going to work long term so I had to do what I had to do. I know there is someone better for me out there but right now it just hurts that we had to end things on such a bad note.

It is a part of growing up.
This is what happens when you get into a relationship too early.

It's your first experience and love becoming one with each other but somewhere down the line. 1 person stops growing.

It is usually, a boyfriend. Girl just has much more to do.
She is more mature and motivated than he is.
She gives him chance after chance to prove to her that he is the guy that will give her every thing she needs in life , to feel content and safe that they can both grow together but once he stops growing she just keeps moving on. And that's the way it should be
Don't feel bad about wanting bigger better things in life because that's who you are you feel bad because you're leaving him behind
But I can tell you or you could probably even tell me you have given him many chances to grow with you it's something that you need to do
You proved yourself who you are and who you want to be.
I think you made the right choice for you I think you made the right choice for him he just doesn't know it yet it will either motivate him or he will sit there until it does
I feel bad for him just because he had the perfect girl and he just doesn't understand what he really had

I even tried to be civil by messaging him and telling him I was sorry for the way things ended. I told him I cared for him but I just didn’t see it working out and said I hope we can be friends one day.
He responds with a voice message saying “If you have something to tell me come tell me to my face” and that he’s sick of back and forth. I didn’t want a back and forth I just thought I should apologize. He’s making it difficult for me to be apologetic-but perhaps I shouldn’t care what he thinks

Well it sounds like you are just in time for the adult than he is see I mean it already shows right now that you are wanting to grow as a person and he still wants to be that little person it sucks no matter which way you look at it but I mean it's a part of life and you have bigger and better things you want to accomplish are to experience

You're falling for emotional blackmail, so please stop. Actually, it IS what you wanted. You didn't want to be with HIM because he wasn't right for YOU. Obviously what you "wished for" is that he WOULD have been right for you... but he wasn't. The whole idea that " I didn't want to hurt you, but I have to do what's right for me", is backwards, and it's a trap. "I have to do what I know is best for me, and that's not to be with you" ... is the right order of things. What happens to him as a result of it is called "life". You take care of you first.
